Thirteen-year-old Teddy Youngblood is in a coma fighting for his life after an unspecified football injury at training camp. His family and friends flock to his bedside to support his recoveryand to discuss the events leading up to the tragic accident. Was this an inevitable result of playing a violent sport, or was something more sinister happening on the field that day? Told in an innovative, multimedia format combining dialogue, texts, newspaper articles, transcripts, an online forum, and Teddys inner thoughts, Game Changer explores the joyous thrills and terrifying risks of Americas most popular sport.

I was really intrigued by the unique storytelling framework and its poetic nature. The story is well-paced so the reader is discovering new layers of the story as it unfolds. This book provides a meaningful lesson about the consequences of hazing while successfully avoiding a moralistic tone. The children in the story, Tommy‘s friends and teammates, push the adults in the story to grow beyond a black and white way of thinking about the situation.

I picked up this recommended book expecting a football story, but it is about much more than the game. Teddy is a freshman who suffers a severe concussion at preseason football camp and is in a coma. The story expresses the joy of being part of a team, but it also addresses the dangers of building that team on a foundation of cruelty and competition instead of cooperation. 🏈

Daisey This book seems right on the line between #middlegrade and #YA to me. The description and language stay perfectly clean, but the characters are in high school. (edited) 5y

This week‘s silent reading book with my classes is about a freshman football player who suffers a severe concussion at practice before the season starts and everything that goes on around this event. It is told in text messages, doctor‘s notes, one sided conversations at his bedside, etc.

What a great book! It was amazing. Today I saw my book and just picked it up and didn‘t put it down. It just got better and better every page. If you like non- fiction I recommend it to you. I would rate it a 8/10.

Great book for teens! It focuses on football and the hazing that can occur when it comes to playing a team sport. I love how the story is told through different formats- texts, newspaper clippings, interviews, online forums, and dialogue. This makes for a quick read. I would recommend to middle schoolers as well as high schoolers.

Teddy Youngblood lies in a coma after a devastating injury during football training camp. At first it looks like it was nothing more than a tragic accident but new information comes out which throws everything into question. Told through chat rooms, texts, hospital reports, interview transcripts, newspaper articles & more, this fast-paced MG book is sure to be a hit with reluctant readers & any young reader interested in a good sports mystery.

hwestfall I will have to pass this onto my son 6y

Scholastic called last week and asked if we‘d like to host Tommy Greenwald who is on (or will be) tour with the paperback edition of the tagged book. There is nothing more exciting than bringing young readers and authors together—the enthusiasm and excitement is always contagious—so of course we said yes! Looking forward to a great visit!

Who would have thought a sports book would land among those I call #huggable ?

Teddy Youngblood is in a coma after a football accident during summer football camp. But was it just an accident?

Told through one-sided conversations from visitors, texts, online posts, news articles, and Teddy‘s thoughts. I loved the format which made for a quick read.

This story address hazing at the high school level and how guilt can eat away at a person.
