Creepy! It definitely French. It‘s a haunting story of three mysterious governesses and their hypnotic hold over the neighbor, poor men passing by and the family they serve. To be honest it was a bit crazy, but I‘m sure if I had read it in one sitting ( it‘s short) it may have felt different. It‘s very poetic and lyrical and you‘re never quite sure what is going on. Like a creepy short French film.

Translated from the French and written in the style of a French fable, it is something of a postmodern fairytale but an erotic one. A story of three young governesses that no one in their right mind would hire to watch children.

This was such a strange little novella. I was trying to figure out what these characters were, but I never could.

This is a very sensual little novella translated from the French. I‘m curious to read more of her writing ✍🏻. Three governesses live and love on a large estate, while watching over a gaggle of young boys. It was originally written in the early 90s. It bares very little resemblance to that other French psychological thriller about a governess that recently came out.

“For the stranger, being tucked up in their silky soft cocoons is a homecoming. He could happily sleep there forever. If he‘s tired, it‘s because he‘s walked a long way and worked hard. What he would like to do is relax for a while and be welcomed into their nest. He wants to lie down inside them and stare at the sky, listen to the sea. But when he does lie down in them, he‘s tormented; he‘ll never find rest there.” 😏
