All We Had: A Novel | Annie Weatherwax
7 posts | 7 read | 6 to read
Soon to be a major motion picture starring Katie Holmes. A stirring debut novel about a mother and daughter who find an unlikely home amid the quirky residents of a small townThe smart style, crisp narrative, sharp dialogue, and vivid descriptions send a powerful message: there is hope hidden in despair (Publishers Weekly). For thirteen-year-old Ruthie Carmichael and her mother, Rita, life has never been stable. Though Rita works more than one job, the pair teeters on the edge of poverty. In their battered Ford Escort, they head east in search of a better life. When money runs out and their car breaks down, they find themselves stranded in a small town called Fat River where Rita finally lands a steady job waitressing at Tinys, the local diner. With enough money to pay their bills, they rent a house and make their own family: tender-hearted Mel, the owner of the diner; the aging owners of the local hardware store whose livelihoods are dwindling; and Peter Pam, the transgender waitress who becomes Ruthies closest friend. Into this unlikely utopia comes a smooth-talking mortgage broker who entices Rita with a subprime loan. Almost as soon as Rita buys a house their fortunes change. Faced once again with the prospect of homelessness, Rita reverts to survival mode, and the price she pays to keep them out of poverty changes their lives forever. Annie Weatherwax has written a stunning, heartrending first novel. A vivid journey into the dark side of the American Dream...that alternates between black comedy and heart-breaking realism...All We Had is an enjoyable read that takes an important look at economic insecurity (Providence Journal).

Taking a break from my #LitsyPartyOfOne with Netflix and the salad I skipped last night. Seems only appropriate to watch a movie based on a book. I chose All We Had. This party has turned into a rager!

A lovely debut indeed! I had a hard time putting this down. The summary did make it seem like each character had a bigger role than some of them did, but I still loved this.

This puzzle makes for a very awesome background. 😻 I decided to tackle my pile of books I already own instead of spending more monies since I just spent $96 on my kitten's first vet visit. Why are furbabies so expensive sometimes?

3.5⭐️I'm debating if that's too generous, but I must admit this book makes you think once you've finished it. Train wreck of a mother, very smart, compassionate daughter. I lost patience with the mom, but then you get a little background on her. The discussion questions in the back of the book made me think a bit more of the significance of the story. I think it could be a good book club read.

JanuarieTimewalker13 Btw, the release date of the film is December 9, Katie Holmes stars and makes her directorial debut. 7y

#bluebooks. I'm reading All We Had or it would be on this shelf. Books and DeBARGE...yes, I'm diggin' the 80s scene right now! "baby you can't go on, wonderin' where you belong." Ahhh, I love them!! This song has been sampled by someone and I can't remember who..."Stay with Me."
