Syrian Brides
Syrian Brides | Anna Halabi
4 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
Um Hussam can't find a suitable bride for her son, testing each candidate's sight, hearing and reading skills, occasionally cobbing a feel. Jamila's husband Hassan can't forget his deceased wife, until she makes sure he never mentions her again. Rami can't help but wonder whether his new bride is a natural beauty or a talented surgeon's masterpiece. Khadija's maid stabs her in the back while Rana's husband Muafak can't find the right excuse to avoid a fight. These and several more stories humorously illustrate the everyday life of married women in Syria, shedding some light on the charms and difficulties of the Syrian culture and customs.

Mehso-so

The first story had me laughing my head off for so many reasons. It's really short as most in this book are and it's just genius.
Theres a lot of humour here tied in with the moral of the stories. I felt that there was a fairly good range of women represented rather than just the typical downtrodden Middle Eastern women that gets carted into every plot line.

A wonderful collection of eleven short stories that tell the life of Syrian brides.

We can easily feel the distinction which exists in this life between men and women, men dominating the public spaces whilst women that within the four walls of their homes.

Pickpick

"Syrian Brides" is an entertaining peek into what life is like for women in Syria. Through 11 short stories, the author covers a range of marital problems while also highlighting the warmth and compassion a relationship can bring - it's 4 stars from me.

Pickpick

This book is a delightful peek into the lives of Syrian brides. Having a dear friend who is Syrian I must say that some of the stories are very stereotypical and definitely not true of the majority of marriages. But true or not each of the stories will affect you in some way. Some relationships are the same across cultures.
