Showa 1939-1944: A History of Japan
Showa 1939-1944: A History of Japan | Shigeru Mizuki
8 posts | 10 read | 9 to read
A master cartoonist and war vet details Japan's involvement in World War II"Showa 1939" "1944: A History of Japan" continues the award-winning author Shigeru Mizuki's autobiographical and historical account of Showa-era Japan. This volume covers the final moments of the lead-up to World War II and the first few years of the Pacific War, and is a chilling reminder of the harshness of life in Japan during this highly militarized epoch. Mizuki writes affectingly about the impact on the Japanese populace of world-changing moments, including the devastating Second Sino-Japanese War, the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the first half of the Pacific War. On a personal level, these years mark a dramatic transformation in Mizuki's life, too. His idyllic childhood in the countryside comes to a definitive end when he's drafted into the army and shipped off to the tiny island of Rabaul in Papua New Guinea. His life becomes a constant struggle for survival, not only against the constant Allied attacks but against the harsh discipline of the Japanese army officers. During his time in Rabaul, Mizuki comes to understand the misery and beauty of the island itself, a place that will permanently mark him and haunt him for the rest of his life."

Another book down for 24 in 48!

I enjoyed Mizuki‘s first volume in the Showa series immensely, so I was happy to have an excuse (Read Harder task plus 24in48 Readathon) to pick up the next one. I really like how he juxtaposes his personal experience with a more distanced overview of events. This volume covers the WWII years up to 1944, which ends on an almost literal cliff-hanger.

"Moved by the valor of the defenders, the next day Japanese flyers dropped two wreathes of flowers into the sea to honor combatants on both sides. There was still respect for the enemy in those early days."

Tonton This is such a great work! 7y
Smrloomis @Tonton Yes, definitely! I picked it up at the library out of curiosity and was hooked. There is a lot of detail about events leading up to WWII and I'm just now getting past Pearl Harbor. Planning on finishing the series soon. 7y

This is the culminating volume of Japanese history in manga form by Shigeru Mizuki, one armed master illustrator. World history, Japanese history, interspersed with autobiography in real time as history unfolds. This is a a masterpiece of storytelling and a lesson in how to live.

It's a graphic novel kind of Sunday.

itsbrb Where do you find most of your graphic novels? I've been asking around and am just starting to get into them so don't want to invest in them, just yet. 8y
Ange44 @itsbrb I've just started getting into them, too. I mainly get them from the library. My library has a pretty big selection, so that helps. 8y
itsbrb Thank you! My small local branch has a really small selection. Might have to make the drive into town. 8y

Mizuki was born in 1922 and served in the Japanese Imperial Army. This book has both a memoir feel but also historical facts/dates of Japan's conquests in Asia. All done in black and white artwork. Highly recommended for anyone interested in WWII or Japanese history or war memoirs. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Black and white artwork that combines a photography style with cartoonish narrator. It's both historical record of the battles of war and first hand account of low level solider. I've only ever been exposed to the US portion of the war and I think this book is so important for perspective

My first manga! And if anyone would like to recommend any other nonfiction graphic novels I would appreciate it! I've already read Persepolis, March by John Lewis and some Lucy Knisley

Caralen I love graphic nonfic! If you liked Persepolis, you should try Nylon Road and A Game for Swallows. 8y
prowlix @Caralen I will look into both those! Thanks! 8y
Lindy Vincent by Barbara Stok (about Van Gogh) and Pablo by Julie Birmant (about Picasso) are two good ones. 8y

Lindy More: Fun Home by Alison Bechdel, Imposter's Daughter by Laurie Sandell, Stitches by David Small. Anything by Guy Deslisle or Jim Ottoviani. So much good stuff! 8y
prowlix @Lindy wow! Thank you so much for the suggestions! Those art history ones sound like a great graphic novel read 💗 8y
Lindy @prowlix When you are ready for more, please ask. Looking forward to what you think as you explore more in this vein. 8y
BestOfFates Second A Game for Swallows, have to recommend Boxers and Saints, which is historical fiction about the Boxer Rebellion but is amazing. And Zahra's Paradise, which does not get the love & attention it deserves. Forget Sorrow & The Harlem Hellfighters are great, as is Abina & the Important Men! 8y
prowlix @BestOfFates thanks! I will add them to the list! 8y
