This biography about Bessie Coleman is very powerful for children. This book would be great for a DR or a PR. This book is also by Nikkie Grimes, and won the Coretta Scott King award for children‘s literature. This https://www.nikkigrimes.com/teacher/besstg.html lesson plan from the authors website offers great writing opportunities for students. The ESOL strategy to be used could be 16. Integrate listening reading and writing activities.

ebrown The UDL strategy could be for language and symbols (2.1-2.5). This would provide an opportunity for the teacher to modify the lesson and present the instructions in multiple forms. Instead of asking students to write a response, they could create a video or any other media outlet for the project. #ucflae3414f19 5y

Jgolub13 I think this poem would be fantastic for a lesson on language and symbols. Great idea! 5y

maciforster This seems like a great book and I love the lesson plan attached!! The open-ended questions to ask are a great way to have these students get to a deeper understanding. 5y
TristanPool Such an interesting way to present a biography! Love your idea to present the information in multiple formats - perfect for our diverse-learning students! @ebrown 5y
Jewelwinkler I‘ve never heard of Bessie Coleman before, but I think it would be great to introduce students (and myself) to her biography. The more students know about historical figures, the better! 5y
DrSpalding I really like the idea of creating the video for a project. This is a much better post than some of the later posts. Excellent poem choice. 5y

This B, written by Nikki Grimes and illustrated by E.B. Lewis, about Elizabeth Coleman shares the story of the first African American woman to have a pilot license. This story won the Coretta Scott King award. Although the story is fictional it is based on the facts of Bessie Coleman's life. Attached is a teacher's resource from the authors website. https://www.nikkigrimes.com/teacher/besstg.html

Olsonashley19 This book would be great for a RA or PR. Can also be used for a biography assignment. You can use UDL principle 3.2 and ESOL strategy 16 in the classroom. #LAE3414sp19 6y
