Absolution by Murder
Absolution by Murder | Peter Tremayne
As the leading churchmen and women gather at the Synod of Whitby in 664AD to debate the rival merits of the Celtic and Roman Churches, tempers begin to fray. Conspirators plot an assassination, while mysterious, violent death stalks the shadowy cloisters of the Abbey of St Hilda. When the Abbess Etain, a leading speaker for the Celtic Church, is found murdered suspicion inevitably rests on the Roman faction. Attending the Synod is Fidelma, of the community of St Brigid of Kildare. As an advocate of the Brehon Court, she is called on to investigate the murder with Brother Eadulf, of the Roman faction. However, the two are so unlike that their partnership is described as that of a wolf and a fox - but which is which? More gruesome deaths follow and the friction among the clerics could end in civil war. Can the solution to the mysteries avert such a conflict?

My first in this series; it won‘t be my last.A map as well as a cast of characters helped to keep me straight on where the various factions & families were located.
A synod is called by the King of Northumbria to settle a religious dispute:should the people follow the Christian church of Ireland or Rome? A series of murders complicate these matters.Sister Fidelma,an advocate of the law & her new partner,a Saxon monk,Brother Eadulf,take the case.

AlaMich After looking back at the review I wrote on LibraryThing an eon ago, i realized that my issues were really “me” things, not so much book things. 😊 But one of them was that PT would repeatedly mention that a character “blinked slowly.” 😂 Glad you enjoyed it, and maybe I‘ll try another one. 3y
kspenmoll @AlaMich This was the first in the series- it could be the best! 3y
tokorowilliamwallace Yay, Thomas Cahill! I read his volume in this series on the Greeks, and just loved reading the development of written script and language to become the Attic+koine Greek alphabet we know. 2y
kspenmoll @tokorowilliamwallace Thanks! I will have to look into the Greek book. 2y

Started this last night. Author recommended by @Andrew65

AlaMich I‘d be interested in knowing what you think about this one. I tried reading a different Sister Fidelma years and years ago but I DNFed it. 3y
kspenmoll @AlaMich Will do. Just finished Prologue. 3y

#weeklyforcast

Plans to continue my chapter per week with You‘ve Changed;
Continue reading The Vanishing Triangle if its disorganization & not so great writing(to say the least) doesn‘t get to me too much; Start the other two.

Cinfhen Hope the book improves 🤞🏽 3y

This was a very good introduction to a new series. Set in the 7th Century it at first took me a while to learn the names and key lead characters but once I did this it was a really good read (well worth the effort) Sister Fidelma is quite a fresh and unique character (for the time period) and I look forward to getting to know her more as the series develops. If you enjoy good historical mysteries I would recommend this. So onto book 2!

Same author, two names. One name for historical nonfiction, one for historical fiction. 🍀 #irishauthors #marchintoreading

A fun mystery in an unconventional historical setting. Audio version was good. Many more books in the series - I might go through them someday.
