This story would be great for children to read once the topic of the World War's comes up in the classroom. I liked how the author included real pictures from World War II of Voytek and the soldiers that took him in at the end of the book. That is a great way for children to relate the book to real life events.
so-soThis Batchelder Award Winning book is based on a true World War II story. A group of Polish men came across a young boy with this bear on their way to fight in the war. They couldn't leave the bear alone with the boy, so they decided to take it with them. This bear, named Voytek, became one of the 120 Polish soldiers that fought in World War II. He gave joy to all of the soliders, and gave them the encouragement to go out and fight. Good story!
pickI love that this book is actually based on real events. Crazy to think that a bear way hanging out in WW2. It seems like an interesting story to tell that also teaches kids about history.
