The Book of Lost Saints | Daniel José Older

An evocative multigenerational Cuban-American family story of revolution, loss, and family bonds. Marisol vanished during the Cuban Revolution, disappearing with hardly a trace. Now, shaped by atrocities long-forgotten, her foul-mouthed spirit visits her nephew, Ramon, in modern day New Jersey. Her hope: That her presence will prompt him to unearth their painful family history. Ramon launches a haphazard investigation into the story of his ancestor, unaware of the forces driving him on his search. Along the way, he falls in love, faces a run-in with a murderous gangster, and uncovers the lives of the lost saints who helped Marisol during her imprisonment. The Book of Lost Saints by Daniel José Older is a haunting meditation on family, forgiveness, and the violent struggle to be free. An Imprint Book

I listen to this on audio and that didn't work so well for me. I was distracted and found the story hard to follow, I know I would have enjoyed this much more had I read it - the writing is good the storyline is solid and the tone is just right for the topic.
Just don't recommend the audio.

Solid pick about a spirit haunting her nephew, trying to get him to uncover family history relating to Cuban revolution. I would have liked less cringey sex scenes and more on Cuban history, but still a pick i think. Who can tell. In the era of COVID-19 i can't tell what's good or not, because I'm so distracted 🥴

JaclynW I'm having the same issue determining which books are really good. My brain is slightly off as well. I hate to be rating books almost because they may be skewed.😄 5y

An evocative story of the spirit of a woman who lived through the Cuban Revolution trying to trace her life via her nephew. Loss, generational trauma, family, freedom are the themes explored by DJO, who has done a stellar job with this book.

Lots of turns I did not expect, beautifully written, rich with history and family. A sensational way end my 2019 book life.
