Mhm... l'm quite disappointed.
The book started fantastically. Lots of things going on, a lot of mystery, very difficult to decypher the mystery.
And the setting, the use if Charles Dickens as a character, the obvious use of Dickens's language, narrative mode e preferenze setting and characters. I really loved this.
But after the middle the story fell apart. A few threads simply disappeared. The motivetto was lame.
Such a disappointment.

Blueroseis The three previous books in the series are by far superior to this one and there are some very funny bits especially as Charles D has no idea why. 5y

JazzFeathers @BarbaraTheBibliophage l don't have a Kindle. I have a Kobo and it uses actual files with a limited life. I can replaced them, as long as the book is still available on Netgalley, but once it has been archived my only option is read it before it expires. 5y

BarbaraTheBibliophage Oh gotcha! I saw the black border and thought Kindle. So Kobo allows you to read in something more like a rental. I didn‘t realize that—thanks for filling me in. And glad you got the book done before it expired! 😎 5y

I'm halfway through this mystery and l'm already loving it.
This is one of those novels where in addition to a very solid mystery, there is a lot more. The character aren't just suspect, they are people, they have an unterior meaning in the story, their lives make sense to the reader even beyond the mystery, and this isn't all that common in mystery stories.

I also love that the author is clearly following Dickens's example.

Apparently, l'm still not done with Victorian London 😂

Well, the truth is that l opened my #NetGalley files with the intention to read a friend's ARC... and l discovered this one expires in 11 days. I need to get going! The first book in the series expired on my last time, can't let it happen again.
And l mean, Dickens as a sleuth? 😉

I waited a long time for the 4th book in my favourite series of books to be published. The Quickening and the Dead by J C Briggs. Again Charles Dickens and Sam Jones investigates. While this was and interesting read there was some thing lacking. In previous books although the crimes were bad there was lots of occurrences that would make you laugh out loud. Not in this book though. There were quotes from Dicken's but this read was disappointing
