#Pemberlittens Ch.21-22: Cass is set to take care of everyone, especially after the death of her father - and no one seems to need it more than Jane. I don‘t like seeing Jane like this, full on depressed. Does anyone know if this is an accurate portrayal? Does she just have an artistic temperament? Sounds to me to be very serious. Poor Cassie. 👇

StayCurious And, man those rich relatives are so oblivious! Especially Edward! Calling them the “Austen Ladies” was a bit of a slap too. Grrr! 5h
BarkingMadRead Edward is horrible, all of their brothers are horrible! To leave them in such grave circumstances! 5h
See All 9 Comments
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead Right?! Ugh. All we read about is all these horrible men 😝 5h
TheBookHippie @StayCurious that was a slap! 5h
IndoorDame I don‘t know if she suffered from depression, but there‘s definitely evidence that whatever chronic immune issues ultimately led to her death severely affected her quality of life and her ability to write at times. Not being able to work would definitely affect the mental health of any artist. 5h
IndoorDame And seriously hating Elizabeth right now! 5h
Crinoline_Laphroaig I don't like seeing Jane depressed either. It's horribly sad. I don't no that there is any proof but speculation. I agree with @IndoorDame of not being able to work would affect her. I also think it would be hard to write when you're life is so unsettled. 3h
julieclair I wish that Cass had had the courage to contradict Elizabeth. But I suppose that would have been an unimaginable breach of etiquette. 1h

#Pemberlittens Ch.20: we see Cassandra show a bit of backbone with Dinah when she demands the letters be returned. We see a bit more of her motivations (and again it comes down to duty - and a fear of her and Jane‘s lives being dissected - especially by Mary). We see a lot of Mary in Caroline 😒 - she said some pretty tactless things in front of Cassandra. This family gives me a headache.

BarkingMadRead Omg I wanted to pop Caroline in the face. Nobody needs two Marys. 2d
suvata So, it appears that the “meddler“ was Dinah, which most of us suspected anyway. Good for Cassy for putting her foot down. It does appear that Mary and Carolyn are two sides of the same coin. Having this family, it‘s no wonder Jane seems to have bouts of melancholy. 2d

#Pemberlittens Ch.19: the Austen girls are bothering me. I understand why Jane didn‘t go through with it even though it would have given her the security she was desperate to have, but why now does Cassy need to stop writing to poor Hobday? Because she‘s leading him on? Why can‘t she just say yes to him? Oh yes, her duty. Feeling frustrated. And for the girls to have to slink back to their parents - how embarrassing and hopeless.

IndoorDame I‘m right there with you! I understand Jane and totally don‘t understand Cassy‘s decisions. Which is super unusual since the story is being told from her perspective 3d
Librarybelle It is frustrating…I feel so bad for Mr Hobday! He sounded like such a nice gentleman. 3d
See All 8 Comments
peanutnine Poor Mr Hobday! But it's probably better that she stopped writing to him if she was just gonna break his heart 💔 3d
julieclair I agree. Cassy is on my nerves. I feel sorry for Mr. Honday. (edited) 3d
suvata I am right with you. These girls are intolerable. Jane wants to marry off Cassy. Cassy wants to marry off Jane, and they‘re leaving a total sh*t-storm in their wake. Also, Mr. Bigg-Wither … hater of the sea! Frustrating chapter. (edited) 3d
TheAromaofBooks I think part of the issue is that Cassy and Tom were standing in the church when she made him that promise*. I think she genuinely sees it as a vow made “before God“ similar to a marriage vow. She's such a dutiful person, I think breaking her promise would make her feel guilty for the rest of her life. But it doesn't make her less frustrating!

*originally autocorrected to “problem“, which may be more accurate 😂
(edited) 3d
willaful I think there's also a hint that Cassy is afraid of marriage. The discomfort she felt seeing Tom's intimate personal items comes back to haunt her. (Unless I'm reading that wrong.) Anyway, I still think she made a huge mistake. 😖

Jane is really the more sensible of the two; she recognizes her mistake and finds the courage to correct it, which must have been tremendously difficult. I doubt being in church would have made a difference to her.

Pickpick

#LittensLoveRomance The final chapters brought the story of Royce and Nicholaa to a satisfying close. Their romance was a fun tête-à-tête and a fantastic battle of the sexes. It was enemies to lovers at its best. It was historical fiction written decades ago that stood up - I first discovered Julie Garwood in high school and this book makes me want to revisit her other books. ?

StayCurious We will have a further discussion on the final Sunday of the month. I hope you all enjoyed our March Medieval Romance as much as I did! 4d
Kshakal I enjoyed this book very much! 4d

BarkingMadRead I loved this!! I had to finish it a few days ago, I couldn‘t wait any more! 4d
CoverToCoverGirl I‘m also happy to have re-visited this early work. And I agree it does stand the test of time. 4d
TheSpineView I definitely enjoyed this one. I now want to read some of her other books. Great pick! 4d
Read4life Not my typical read but this was a great pick. I‘m so glad I read this with all of you. I may just read more Garwood in the future. 4d

#Pemberlittens Ch.17-18: Oh Cassy…sigh. You‘re punishing yourself and destined for a lonely life. How disappointing. Now granted, it would have been nice to get to know Henry a bit more before he proposed, but things were different back then. By all accounts, he was perfect. And you blew it. And then jump to 1840 - no wonder you‘re desperate to settle Isabella and give her a future. 👇

StayCurious You need to be useful and here is someone that needs you. But what is up with Dinah?? 4d
BarkingMadRead Dinah is not happy, but what choice does Isabella have? 4d
See All 6 Comments
suvata Henry Hobday: Suitor or Stalker? Depends on what Century you are living in. Seriously though, I don‘t understand why Cassy is denying her self a happy future. I know she doesn‘t want to break her promise but, really, was it a promise? Jane is very clever about finding ways to get rid of people so she can have some peace and quiet. 4d
Librarybelle Cassandra denying herself happiness is so sad. 4d
julieclair Ooohhh, @suvata , what an interesting point! By today‘s standards, he is a stalker. And oh, Cassandra… break the promise. Tom is dead and doesn‘t care. Plus, he didn‘t want you to make the promise in the first place. 3d

#Pemberlittens Ch.16: I missed a day! My library ebook got returned right as I was in the middle of a chapter - very frustrating. I had to find another copy. Anywho…boy those meddling Mamas…they‘re so transparent it‘s embarrassing but also to be expected. Mrs.Austen has not given up. Her house has all the single ladies and she wants that to change. Jane intends to scare off anyone who comes close. 👇

StayCurious And Cass is so caught up in her own head she‘s missing what‘s there. Take the leap, darling! You‘ve mourned long enough. 5d
BarkingMadRead Ugh I really wish she would move on, it‘s been so long and I don‘t think Tom really expected her to never marry! 5d

IndoorDame @BarkingMadRead I don‘t either. That would just be too awful of him! 5d
suvata Cassy: Heavens, no! I am a mourning widow, but may I introduce you to my sister Jane? (Not a direct quote, just a general feeling I got from this chapter). Cassy needs to get a grip! 5d
suvata @StayCurious Absolutely. Leap away, my dear. 5d
julieclair Cass promised Tom she would never marry… even though he never asked her to promise that. It was rather shortsighted of her, even if it was heartfelt. Why shouldn‘t she have a chance at happiness? Life is for the living. 5d

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.15-16 - sorry I‘m a bit behind, but I‘ll have my final review up tomorrow. These chapters were fun - Nicholaa tries to tamp down her temper, her true self in an effort to please her husband - and he hates it! He wants his passionate wife back! She loves him and he loves her just the way she is. It‘s very sweet.

BarkingMadRead I really loved this, he got what he wanted and then didn‘t want it 🤣🤣 (edited) 5d

#Pemberlittens Ch.15: Cassandra ventures out into the not so idyllic town and we are reminded that the Fowles are not the perfect upstanding family they appear to be. They have family drama and Cassandra is appalled at being confronted with it. How can they not hold each other up as the Austens do? Although she needs to be reminded that she was thrown out of her house by her brother once upon a time.

BarkingMadRead The way they all treat each other blows my mind! I know that was common for the time period, but damn! Do not abandon your sisters after yo he stolen their home from your parents! 🙄🙄 1w

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.13-14: life in the manor isn‘t peaceful, that‘s for sure. But Royce is certainly trying to make it that way. If only his wife would listen! I honestly feel bad for Nicholaa. She‘s going through so much with her family and learning to love and everything she knows is changing. How are these two going to come to an understanding that works for the both of them?

BarkingMadRead These two need ten minutes in the closet. Communication is key! 1w
TheAromaofBooks @BarkingMadRead - I know, right? When we were kids, if my brother and I got in a fight, Mom would make us hold hands and do laps around the yard until we had worked it out. That's the kind of thing these two need, I think 😂 1w

When Thurston arrives and calls her a traitor, Nicholaa is torn. How can she be loyal to the man she loves if it means ignoring her family and burying the woman she thought she was? 👇

StayCurious Will love be worth losing herself or can she forge a new identity and blend elements of the past and future together? 1w
OriginalCyn620 The scene with Thurston was rough! It seems like he could‘ve at least listened to his sister‘s side of things. But hitting her was crossing a line. I kinda wanted Royce to kill him, but of course, I get why he didn‘t. Now I‘m rooting for the newlyweds even more! 1w

#Pemberlittens Ch.10: Interesting - there‘s a secret liaison in Cassandra‘s past - I don‘t think it was Jane falling for a man by the sea. At least that wasn‘t the impression I got. And then she has the bad manners to get sick - how awfully inconsiderate of her. Do you think Dinah found the letters? Is she a spy for Mary?

suvata Very interesting theory that Dinah may be a spy for Mary. It sounds completely plausible. This chapter has a great quote in honor of “National Women‘s Month: “Through her life, Cassandra‘s happiest moments had been passed in the company of excellent women. They had all, of course, sadly departed. Oh, she missed and thought of them constantly, and of one above all.” 2w

willaful Dinah is definitely Up to Something, but she does seem pretty devoted to Isobel. This is quite exciting for such a quiet looking novel! 😁

#Pemberlittens Ch.9: how scary to have your future suddenly gone. To go from fiancé to probable spinster aunt in such a short time. To have all your prospects gone. How scary to be a woman. willaful Yes, such a sad, sad chapter. Cassandra's decision to make the best of the situation is somewhat admirable, but also frustrating because life was so unfair to her and she had no other vision for herself. 2w

StayCurious @BethM it‘s completely up to you😁 I can take you off my daily tag list no problem. Let me know 2w
StayCurious @LiseWorks I know! I thought that was a neat detail to bring us back in time 2w

CoverToCoverGirl @LiseWorks I had to read the that sentence twice, by that standard I‘d now be described as ancient! 2w
CoverToCoverGirl I‘m enjoying the battle of the wills. She was clever in her tactics to evade capture and gain sanctuary but I‘m anticipating how clever and crafty Baron Royce will be in getting her to leave sanctuary. Until tomorrow….. 2w
MeganAnn My library hold on this just came in today! Picking it up tomorrow and then I‘ll catch up. I‘m very excited about this one! 2w
Clwojick I‘m so glad I stuck with it! It was a little slow for me at first, but then I ended up devouring it! 💜 I‘ll check in at the end of the month since I finished it all in one go. 2w
TheAromaofBooks I started this one on the first, and then realized we weren't actually starting until the eighth 😂 But I'm ready to pick back up today! 2w
OriginalCyn620 I am loving Nicholaa! She‘s got spunk! I think she and Royce will have some great chemistry together! 2w
peanutnine My library hold finally came in! Loving the back and forth between these two so far! 1w
BookwormAHN I love Nicholaa. Posing as a nun was brilliant 👏🏻 1w
PageShifter I laughed when it was revealed how there wasn't a twin, and now I laughed again when I saw those pictures 🤣🤣 The second chapter wasn't as fun but Royce met her knowing who she was. 6d

#Pemberlittens: Ch.8 - wow. Just wow. Mary Austen is evil and mean spirited. First with that tactless poem, then with that letter. Poor Cassandra. And I really feel for Mary‘s daughter too.

TheBookHippie It was certainly over the top 😵‍💫😬🤯. 2w
BarkingMadRead Omg I want to drop kick her so badly! Ughhhh 2w

janeycanuck I was also moved to tears when Mary read that poem. But mine were tears of pain. I did absolutely laugh hysterically when she was yammering on about how someday everyone would know the name Austen and it wouldn‘t because of Jane. 2w
janeycanuck @BarkingMadRead do you need an assistant for that? I am available. 2w
Librarybelle Mary is absolutely terrible! Grrr… 2w
willaful I'm dying to know whether the poem is real. It definitely seems to have borrowed a lot! 2w

#Pemberlittens Ch.7 - so Mary, now Mary Austen, is the worst! She‘s the relative everyone dreads seeing. And we now know she‘s the one who will be going through Eliza‘s papers and will be the main antagonist I think when it comes to Cassandra‘s mission. Also, bad news is coming about Tom I think-in the past. How will reliving it affect Cassandra in the present?

BarkingMadRead Ew, Mary is awful! What a horrible human being! 2w
IndoorDame So awful! I‘m feeling worried that Cassandra is such a terrible sneak. I don‘t think she‘ll be a match for Mary 😬 2w
See All 9 Comments
peanutnine @IndoorDame she is the worst at being sneaky!! 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig Mary shows up in #JaneAndTheExcellentReadalong as well. She's gone down in history as a dreadful person. 2w
suvata There is one sentence that pretty much sums up the entire chapter. “Mary Austen had come with a long list of grievances and an ungovernable impulse to air them forthwith.” 2w
KristiAhlers I so feel that meme lol. Mary is just so ick! 2w
janeycanuck Agreed. Mary is awful. But I‘m dreading our next chapter, knowing what‘s coming next… 2w
julieclair @suvata 💯Perfect sentence to sum up the chapter. And about the next chapter, I fear that Cassandra will have a painful time as she relives her memories… (edited) 2w

#Pemberlittens Ch.6 Cassandra is taken back to when she was working hard to match Mary Lloyd with her widower brother James - perhaps not the best idea but hindsight is 20/20. I guess she had to keep herself occupied during Tom‘s long absence. But Mary seems whiney and desperate and a bit mean to her sister and not worthy of becoming an Austen. IMO.

TheBookHippie I agree 💯. 2w
BarkingMadRead I am not a fan of Mary at all 2w
See All 7 Comments
Librarybelle Mary is portrayed as a very whiny, but also manipulative - the way she converses with James at the ball took a lot of calculation. 2w
willaful I suspect both James and Mary got the spouses they deserved. 😒 2w
suvata My goodness, aren‘t the Austen women quite the match-making group. I am happy to see that Jane pretty much stayed out of it. And, James is such a narcissist. 2w

#Pemberlittens Ch.5: Cassandra is awash in memories and Dinah is suspicious of her wandering around the house. And did the maid see the letters on Cassandra‘s bed? Probably. Then Cassandra goes for a walk and sees none other than Isabella meeting someone, a “gentleman”. How strange!

BarkingMadRead So much drama in this chapter! Dinah needs to chill out, but who is this mystery gentleman? Can‘t wait to find out! 2w
willaful I think Isabella's comments about.. the doctor, I think?... were rather suggestive. 2w

IndoorDame I was waiting for the drama! 2w
julieclair Like @willaful , I'm betting it's the doctor. And as for Dinah, she is on my last nerve, always lurking around. I don't trust her 2w
suvata What is up with Dinah, indeed? She definitely is a lurker. 👀 I, too, suspect that Isabella is meeting the good doctor. 2w
janeycanuck Such mystery and intrigue! I am a bit worried about the whole situation blowing up in Cassandra‘s face, though. It doesn‘t feel like she‘ll cope well if confronted. 2w

#Pemberlittens Ch.4: Cassie goes to visit Tom‘s family after he‘s back for Christmas break and she‘s basically miserable. They seem like such a subdued bunch and she misses her fun loving family. Tom‘s not the same after his experiences at sea and senses that he might not return when he finally leaves on his journey. 👇

StayCurious Cassie promises him she‘ll never marry another. Even though she was very recently having doubts as to whether their marriage was a good idea…this is not going to end well. Also - Fulwar is an ass. 3w

IndoorDame He is terrible! On the whole though, I‘m finding the characters really well drawn so far!!! 3w
KristiAhlers Fulwar is the absolute worst. And kudos to the author who can write a character that makes yoh have such a violent dislike. 3w
julieclair I agree this will not end well. And Fulwar... Ugh. 3w
suvata What a boring household Tom lives in. “She looked around at his property: a Bible, old Latin primers, not even one novel.” And Christmas must be a real hoot with “No music. No games. No reading or good conversation!” 3w
willaful Definitely getting the sense that Cassandra dodged a bullet. 3w

#Pemberlittens Ch.3: poor Cassie - her fiancé (who let‘s face it, doesn‘t seem like the sharpest tool in the shed) is leaving her for at least a year to seek adventure and find his fortune. All Cassie can do is support his decision because he wouldn‘t ask her permission, of course. No, he made this decision without consulting her. Which annoys her and us but was totally par for the course back then.?

StayCurious I just have a horrible feeling that Tom won‘t be back, and if he does return, he won‘t be the same man she agreed to marry. 3w

#Pemberlittens Ch.2 - after a bit of guilty snooping, Cassandra thankfully finds the letters - before Mary Austen gets in there. Now she has to read through them to find anything that‘s incriminating to protect Jane‘s reputation. What could be in those letters I wonder? Also, poor pathetic Isabella! I feel bad for her actually. Her father sounds like a peach.

TheBookHippie Got book I‘ll be caught up tomorrow ! 3w

IndoorDame @Bklover haha, ditto. She‘s the worst spy 😂 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig I'd forgotten how many great quotes this book had! I think I made graphics when I first read. Will see if I can find them. And as usual Juliet Stevenson narration is perfection! 3w
janeycanuck @Crinoline_Laphroaig I‘m reading the audio, too. The narration is wonderful! I‘ve actually cringed once or twice when Stevenson slips into some of the characters. I love it! 2w

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch 1: Awkward! Cassandra Austen, who appears to be an old family friend, arrives practically unannounced at the vicarage and receives a truly lukewarm reception. In a time period where hospitality was so important, they practically show her none. But Cassandra has a reason for being there and she doesn‘t intend to leave until she finds the letters she is looking for - despite the chilly feel to the air of the house.

BarkingMadRead They were going out of their way to be rude to Cassandra! Ugh! 3w

KristiAhlers I love these memes. I don't understand why people can be so mean. They worked overtime really to be mean. 3w
suvata I already know I‘m going to like this book. I hate unexpected visitors too, but Cassandra was on a deadline. She couldn‘t dillydally if she wanted to find those letters. Favorite quote from Chapter 1: “A single woman should never outlive her usefulness. It was simple bad manners.” 3w
julieclair I felt so sorry for Cassandra. I also sympathized with Isabella, as I am not fond of last minute house guests either. But she didn't have to be so rude. 3w
julieclair @suvata Yes! Great quote! 3w
willaful I also feel I'm going to like this. The dry wit is very appropriate. I'm really curious about how things turned out this way for Cassandra and if it was the best thing for her. 3w

#LittensLoveRomance Post Book Discussion - I can‘t believe February is over already! I loved our February book and am already on book 3 of the series. Tell me what you did or didn‘t like about Em and Con‘s story. Here are a few questions to get us started.

KristiAhlers I LOVED this story. I do believe an instant connection can grown quickly into intense emotions. The fact that they were both broken gave them an odd bit strong foundation to grow from. He was an amazing book boyfriend. 4w
KristiAhlers I also agree this book was super emotional (which is one of the reasons I loved it so much to be honest) the author tackled hard issues and didn't make them throwaway issues. Nothing was an instant fix. From personal experience regading tough things (not like this though) a bonding with people I went through the hard time with was strong and permanent 4w
See All 12 Comments
BarkingMadRead I loved this and I‘m ordering book 2 soon! I really liked that it was so real and the ending went necessarily your typical happy ending 4w
BookwormAHN I also loved this story, and I almost think he had to be that obsessive so she would know that he was serious and that she couldn't easily chase him off. Also the narrator of the audiobook was fantastic 😺 4w
Julsmarshall So good! 3w
TheSpineView I enjoyed this one. I hope March's choice is as good. 3w
MeganAnn I agree with @BookwormAHN that Con had to be overly obsessive or Emily would have quickly pushed him away. His behavior felt especially true to character once we found out more of his past. I really don‘t think these two would have worked out any other way. I also think that instant love type stories are more believable when the characters are younger like these two…. We are more reckless/impulsive at that age including our feelings and emotions. 3w
MeganAnn And on your third point, this is something that does sometimes annoy me in books. But here it didn‘t bother me quite as much. I think possibly because we did have some nicer female characters (Emily‘s teacher who helped her, her friend from school, etc) to balance that out a little. It will be interesting to see how the author treats her female characters in the rest of the books which I haven‘t gotten to yet to truly examine that topic. 3w
OriginalCyn620 I really enjoyed this one too! Personally, I don‘t think Con crossed a line with Emily. I think his behavior came from a place of truly wanting to protect her. I think he was pretty swoonworthy! 3w
OriginalCyn620 I don‘t know if I believe in love at first sight, but I do think you can have an instant connection, if that makes sense. Con and Em were obviously drawn to each other, and the fact that they were both broken but complemented each other just made the story so beautiful! 3w
OriginalCyn620 The author‘s portrayal of women in this book was realistic, I think. If we‘re just talking about women, then sure, some will be slutty, catty, and/or unlikable. But some women aren‘t like that, which we saw in the best friend and the former teacher. Just like we saw that not all men are monsters like Frank. Danny became a father figure to Emily and filled a void in her life. 3w

#Pemberlittens - Entertainment was a fitting way to end and I found the chapter lived up to its name. Overall, I enjoyed this book. It wasn‘t overly long winded, the pacing was good, the research was well done, and the separation of the classes to learn about everyone was easy to follow. My ebook did have pictures at the end but I feel they could have served better placed within the material. But I do know a lot more about Jane‘s time than before.

inthegreensandblues Entertainment was definitely ending on a high note! I really enjoyed this book too. Now I want to listen to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. 😄 I've never thought of it as late Regency music before. 1mo

suvata I really enjoyed this book. And the last chapter was very uplifting and fun. It was definitely a lot of information to absorb, but I think it was fascinating to know how the Austen‘s lived and how her circumstances probably greatly affected her writing. So good. #Pemberlittens Ch.11: I always found it interesting that practicing law was more respectable than being a doctor back in the day - from this book I‘ve learnt reasons why it was such a sought after profession. It must have been tedious and frustrating to have to work within the confines of a legal system that moved like molasses at times. It was interesting to learn about policing and transportation as well.

Bklover I‘m reading a section in Middlemarch where they talk about doctors only getting paid by selling medicine, not doctor fees, so I kind of see why they didn‘t get respect. People paid for the medicine- not the doctor. I still wouldn‘t have wanted to be a lawyer back then though. I keep wondering what they‘d have thought of the world today. 1mo
Aimeesue @Bklover Yeah, I thought that part in Middlemarch was interesting too. How different things are today. For the most part, at least. 1mo

Bluebird I never understood the logic behind debtor‘s prison. A debtor cannot pay a bill, so is placed in a prison where they can not earn money to help repay it. And then rack up further bills for their upkeep-also likely also go unpaid. 🤷🏻‍♀️. I was very surprised to learn that even if they could repay what is owed, the creditor can refuse to accept it! I guess that is one way for a creditor to get the ultimate revenge on someone they don‘t like! 1mo
suvata I can sort of believe the disparity between being a doctor versus law enforcement. If you think about it, in the regency era, the doctors had very little to work with. So, their care rate was not very good — no penicillin, no x-rays, no bloodwork, etc. On the other hand, law enforcement produced results. They imprisoned criminals. They caught thieves. Thus, making the area a little bit safer. Strange that today it is a 💯 flip. 1mo
suvata @Bluebird I agree with you. Debtors prison is a counterproductive, vicious circle. 1mo

BookNAround I checked on yours yesterday Renee and it said it had left Detroit heading to Canada. Of course, first it went from me to Florida so in the wrong direction to start with. At least Detroit has it moving in the correct direction. 😂 1mo

#Pemberlittens Ch.10 - I have a horrid fascination with old timey medicine so I enjoyed this chapter even if I found some stuff difficult to read. As with other chapters, the author doesn‘t pull punches. I‘m still cringing from the dentist section…and I was actually surprised that a large number of people cared about cleanliness.

TheAromaofBooks I was horrified by the descriptions of the insane asylums! It seems so horrific that you would turn over your loved one thinking that you were doing the best thing for them, only to have them chained and treated worse than animals. The flip side was learning about how this is the era where those things started to change. Amazing the difference a small group of people started!! 1mo
Ruthiella The dentistry parts really got to me too. Yikes! 1mo

inthegreensandblues The condition of children working in factories got me... It's common knowledge that it was bad but the details really are horrific. 1mo
suvata Another difficult chapter but very informative. Yeah, I think I would skip the dentist. I forgot that at this time they didn‘t know about germs, so they attributed many illnesses to absurd causes. 1mo
suvata “On top of plain ignorance, you have wilful self-deception. Many gluttons know that large quantities of rich food are bad for them but they shut their minds to the likely consequences. You can say the same for those who rely heavily on laudanum. There is in all periods a propensity for people to satisfy their appetites despite the risks to their health, and to lie to themselves about the probable eventual outcomes.” 1mo
Bluebird I also like the author‘s style. Straightforward and highly readable despite the horrific topics. And I like how he highlights some positive things at the end of several chapters. I didn‘t realize how the change came about that ended the insane asylum abuses. The dental procedures didn‘t bother me as much as the eye ones. Cataract surgery with only laudanum as an aesthetic. 😬 1mo

#Loveathon #Loveathon23 This was a great romance that started out with letters - I love that idea. Kale and Terra are great characters and Terra is such a badass she can take care of herself and everyone around her. I can‘t wait to read the next in the series.

#Pemberlittens Ch.9: sorry for another late post. When you have a toddler - you‘re on their schedule 😄. This was an interesting chapter and I liked how once again he broke it up to different levels of society. I love learning about the history of food and drink and the cost of everything. I don‘t think I would like the food much on visiting though. Sheep‘s udders? Calf‘s head?

Patchshank Lol. I love the toast description 1mo
KristiAhlers I found this to be very interesting. I guess this was a case of waste not want not. But yeah. How hungry would you have to be to think sheep bladder. Yes please 🤣 1mo

IndoorDame Yeah, I love hearing about all the food, but I‘m pretty sure I‘d be on the tea and toast diet if I visited. 1mo
Ruthiella It might be safest to stick to desserts when visiting. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks I was thinking about how he was also saying that you would frequently pay for animals by the pound while they're still alive, then take it home to slaughter it yourself... which means eating every single part of it becomes pretty critical. But I'm not sure I would be into eating brains 😬 1mo
Bklover @TheAromaofBooks I would probably end up with some very large pets! 🐄🐮 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @Bklover - Fair enough!! 😂 1mo
suvata @Ruthiella I believe you are correct. Desserts would be the safest choice. Or I might become a vegetarian. 1mo

I loved this book and the romance between Emily and O‘Connell. The entire book was a great read, and the final three chapters really pulled you in. It was hard to put down. I really want to read the continuation to their story In The Aftermath. If anyone has similar books to this one in their repertoire, let me know! #LittensLoveRomance

Kshakal I also really enjoyed it and want to continue with the series! 1mo

#Pemberlittens Ch.8: just thinking about what you might catch in an inn…like in our last book. And reading about how poor people lived was rough. But I must admit to being fascinated with how the wealthy lived. There should be a show called “Regency Cribs”

suvata Regency Cribs 😂 I love it 1mo
suvata Eww! “Some hard-pressed chambermaids don‘t change the sheets if they‘ve only been used once; either that or they just dampen them and dry them hurriedly before reusing them.” Remind me to never stay at an Inn. (edited) 1mo

inthegreensandblues Fascinating to read such detailed descriptions of all the different levels of housing. I think I'd like best like a gentleman's townhouse, with mahogany everything! 😆 1mo
inthegreensandblues This was also interesting, re the extremely poor Scots who were literate, bilingual, "And welcoming to Frenchmen. You have to rethink what 'abject poverty' means when those who experience it do not care for worldly comforts yet pride themselves on their learning, their piety, and their hospitality." 1mo
Bklover I wouldn‘t go anywhere. 1mo
StayCurious @Bklover hahaha and yet people did all the time! 1mo
CoffeeNBooks It might just be me, but it seems that the excesses of the Regency period are more excessive than at other times. 1mo
