In the play, set in Padua, Lucentio and other suitors pursue Bianca, but are told by her father, Baptista, that her bad-tempered older sister, Katherine, must marry first. They encourage Petruchio, who has come to Padua to find a wealthy wife, to court Katherine and free Bianca to marry.

I like Shakespeare and I‘m slowly making my way through all his works, but this play was a bit frustrating for me. I completely get that it was written in the 1500-1600s and therefore would obviously reflect the thoughts of the time, but it still irked me that it‘s a play about an over-privileged ass breaking the spirit of a badass woman so he could feel more manly. Ugh.

TalesandTexts Interesting perspective. The funny thing is, very few people think of this play this way. But this is true. 4y
