The Locked Room
The Locked Room: A Martin Beck Police Mystery (8) | Maj Sjöwall, Per Wahlöö
6 posts | 9 read | 3 to read
The stunning eighth installment in the Martin Beck mystery series by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö is a masterful take on a classic locked room mystery. A young blonde in sunglasses robs a bank and kills a hapless citizen. Across town, a corpse with a bullet shot through its heart is found in a locked room–with no gun at the scene. The crimes seem disparate, but to Martin Beck they are two pieces of the same puzzle, and solving it becomes the one way he can escape the pains of his failed marriage and the lingering effects of a near-fatal bullet wound. Exploring the ramifications of egotism and intellect, luck and accident, this tour de force of detection bears the unmistakable substance and gravity of real life. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This is the only book I read in August that fits our #womenintranslation prompt. This is supposed to be one of the best in the series, but I liked the two others Ive read so far more. This one did have some interesting digressions on the history of the expansion and militarization of the swedish police force though, which I thought was only something that happened in the US!

#top20series #20series20days

Day number 2 - the Martin Beck series is classic Nordic noir. Heralded for it's accuracy as a police procedural, this series has marvelous descriptive prose, a roundly developed cast of characters, and an understated sense of humor. Highly recommend.

3.5âï¸ so a Pick. One of my favourite books in the series case-wise, but once again there are totally gratuitous observations of when female characters aren't wearing bras 🙄 I'm convinced the husband of the husband-and-wife author team wrote those chapters 🙄🙄

Not my favorite in this series; sad that there‘s only one more to read. I still give it thumbs up because Martin Beck is such a great character.

I mean, it is a good book. Don‘t get me wrong. I just didn‘t love it. I‘ll read the same Agatha Christie 30 times and be engaged every time but once was enough for this book. I‘ve heard crime novelists rave about this book and I just didn‘t get that excited about it.
