Pickpick

Stories of Yehoshuah/Jesus from Miryam/Mary, Iehouda/Judas, Caiaphas, and Bar-Avo/Barrabas.

The stories are firmly rooted in the Jewish context of a land occupied by the Romans but show a figure different but recognisably extrapolated from the stories in the New Testament. Fascinating.

I've always had a strange fascination for "retellings" of the story of Jesus and this one is no exception. In Alderman's tale Jesus (Yehoshuah) appears little and, fittingly, what we learn of him is told by others; his mother, Judas (Iehuda), the High Priest of Jerusalem and Bar-Avo (Barabbas). It's a rich, moving and thoughtful story that tackles faith, love, pride and the sheer transformative power of stories

vivastory Terrific review, as always. Sounds fantastic! 6y
Moray_Reads @vivastory it was excellent. I particularly enjoyed the sections of Mary and Barabbas, intelligent and thought-provoking 6y
vivastory I have been meaning to read Alderman for awhile. It's interesting because it seems like her older work is more loved than The Power. 6y
Moray_Reads @vivastory I really enjoyed this one but I've started The Power three times and only managed a few pages so far 6y
