This is a lovely book of poems.
This is difficult.
I love Rumi, such that fifteen years ago I began to teach myself to read Persian. In the end I made an audio-recording/CD of my translations. I sold two copies. Two. Cue another major depression. I've avoided Rumi since then. I actually prefer Coleman Barks' other book, "The Essential Rumi", to this one, which has a shorter attention span and, while good, comes across at times as a thematic collection of quotable sound-bites.

Many of the poems' style and significance escape me; however as with any book, you take away from it what "speaks" to you. Here are are three favorites:
A thousand half-loves must be forsaken to take one whole heart home.
Love is the religion; the universe is the book.
Some nights stay up until dawn, as the moon sometimes does for the sun. Be a full bucket pulled up the dark way of a well, then lifted out into light.
