Rumi: The Book of Love
Rumi: The Book of Love | Coleman Barks
6 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
The Sufi mystic and poet Jalaluddin Rumi is most beloved for his poems expressing the ecstasies and mysteries of love in all its formserotic, platonic, divineand Coleman Barks presents the best of them in this delightful and inspiring collection. Rendered with freshness, intensity, and beauty as Barks alone can do, these startling and rich poems range from the "wholeness" one experiences with a true lover, to the grief of a lover's loss, and all the states in between: from the madness of sudden love to the shifting of a romance to deep friendship to the immersion in divine love. Rumi, the ultimate poet of love, explores all "the magnificent regions of the heart," and he opens you to the lover within. Coleman Barks has made this medieval, Persian-born (present-day Afghanistan) poetic and spiritual genius the most popular poet in America today. This seductive volume reveals Rumi's charms and depths more than any other.

This is difficult.
I love Rumi, such that fifteen years ago I began to teach myself to read Persian. In the end I made an audio-recording/CD of my translations. I sold two copies. Two. Cue another major depression. I've avoided Rumi since then. I actually prefer Coleman Barks' other book, "The Essential Rumi", to this one, which has a shorter attention span and, while good, comes across at times as a thematic collection of quotable sound-bites.

Many of the poems' style and significance escape me; however as with any book, you take away from it what "speaks" to you. Here are are three favorites:

A thousand half-loves must be forsaken to take one whole heart home.

Love is the religion; the universe is the book.

Some nights stay up until dawn, as the moon sometimes does for the sun. Be a full bucket pulled up the dark way of a well, then lifted out into light.
