Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics
Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics | Mikhail Bakhtin
1 post | 1 read | 2 to read
This book is not only a major twentieth-century contribution to Dostoevsky s studies, but also one of the most important theories of the novel produced in our century. As a modern reinterpretation of poetics, it bears comparison with Aristotle. Bakhtin s statement on the dialogical nature of artistic creation, and his differentiation of this from a history of monological commentary, is profoundly original and illuminating. This is a classic work on Dostoevsky and a statement of importance to critical theory. Edward Wasiolek Concentrating on the particular features of Dostoevskian discourse, how Dostoevsky structures a hero and a plot, and what it means to write dialogically, Bakhtin concludes with a major theoretical statement on dialogue as a category of language. One of the most important theories of the novel in this century. The Bloomsbury Review"

I studied Bakhtin a little in grad school, and all I remember now is that I found him to be one of the few theorists worth the trouble. So that when Madeleine Thien talked about his concept of "unfinalizability" from this book in her lecture in Tokyo a couple weeks ago, which basically means that nobody, no character, is ever finished, flat, that everybody has room to develop, grow, and change, I was struck enough to order the book.

saresmoore This sounds great! I hadn't heard of Bakhtin, but this is an intersection of several of my top interests! (edited) 7y
shawnmooney @saresmoore Great! I'd suggest a buddy read, but you and/or half of Litsy might throttle me! LOL 7y
saresmoore Hahaha! I'm currently pretty annoyed at buddy reading. Not the buddies, just the reading. I think I've developed a deep & consuming loathing of Salman Rushdie. 7y

saresmoore Bahahaha! Oy vey. No, please don't. I tend to agree with Rushdie's allegorical intimations, I just think he's a pompous ass and his writing style is endlessly infuriating. 7y
LeahBergen @saresmoore Please stop me if you see me joining in on a buddy read for the next 6 months! 😂 7y
saresmoore @LeahBergen Oh my goodness, will do! Hahaha! Why is it so stressful?? 7y
