About a third of my way into my first Brookner novel and I've already had to look up three words. The writing is very polished and taut.
Whether I like it or not, still undecided.
charl08 Always so miserable! I found a pile when I was a student. (When I never had enough to read, so read everything I could get my hands on). I wonder what I would make of these now. 3y
merelybookish @charl08 Yeah, it is such a particular character study. It feels like she's trying to say something about women's lives but it almost feels anti-woman. Or like women are divided into the halves and have-nots. 3y
Ruthiella I loved Hotel du Lac but didn‘t love the two books of hers that I read subsequently: Falling Slowly and The Rules of Engagement. I got so weary of reading about her unhappy characters who wander around unhappy and lonely. 3y
merelybookish @Ruthiella That sounds a bit like this book. 🤔😬 3y
