Fardwor, Russia!
Fardwor, Russia!: A Fantastical Tale of Life Under Putin | Oleg Kashin
5 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
When a scientist experimenting on humans in a sanatorium near Moscow gives a growth serum to a dwarf oil mogul, the newly heightened businessman runs off with the experimenter's wife and a series of mysterious deaths and crimes commences. Fantastical and wonderfully strange, this political parable has an uncanny resonance with today's Russia under Putin. A witty, playful, brave and incisive work that blends science fiction with political satire, Fardwor, Russia! Is a must-read about contemporary Russia and the hilarious and frightening follies of power.

Set in Russia as it heads back into another Putin presidency and toward hosting the Olympics in Sochi, satirizing government officials and people who attacked the author when he was a journalist. It is a quick read but I didn't feel I understood all the references; satire is a bit of a struggle for me. I liked reading a Russia that combined peasants, social media, and magical serums.

Sick twisted little book. I loved it. A dystopian vision of modern Russia that was a brilliant and important story. #Russia

I saw Oleg Kashin speak with Andrey Kurkov at this year's Edinburgh Book Festival and it was one of my favourite events, two fascinating writers firmly within Russia's satirical-fantastical tradition (a personal favourite). Sadly Fardwor, Russia felt a little too sketchy and undeveloped to make the most of its potential. I'd still like to read Kashin's nonfiction #fictionintranslation #Russia #satire

A strange satire of life under the Russia of Putin. An amateur inventor creates a growth serum with the intention of increasing meat production, but when his experiments brings him in contact with a midget oligarch and Soviet bureaucracy his life and the life of those around him is thrown into chaos

Oblomov26 A short read, but the humour did not work for me like I hoped it would. 8y
