Fascinating and engaging snapshot of how toy companies used psychology and media loop holes to basically sell an idea of childhood with long form commercials (i.e. cartoons) with a heavy slant on capitalizing to the boys. Box Brown is really good at making these large (yet still seemingly niche) markets/stories accessible to the casual reader.

keithmalek Is this why so many "men" of my generation are in a permanent state of adolescence? 1mo
Eyelit @keithmalek seems likely 😆 there‘s def a lot of talk about nostalgia around commercial properties later in the book - especially sad because said properties sold you the story as well as the toy so imaginative play is less of a priority… it‘s one of those blatantly obvious things once it‘s pointed out 1mo

Spent the afternoon trying to be a birder with @Soubhiville & @alysonimagines - but the birds weren‘t cooperative 🤣

Loved this graphic novel that reinterprets Northanger Abbey to modern day small town Texas with queer and bipoc rep.

A world where wishes are regulated and can be bought by anyone with means (or received as a gift/prize). This is a trilogy of stories concerning such a gift of three wishes and who ends up using them. This was an unexpected gut punch as well as an absolute delight. Kicking myself for not purchasing it this past weekend when making the rounds for indie bookstore day… but once I‘m off my book buying ban I‘ll be adding this to my collection.

Mehso-so

Mostly ok comic about Sarah Winchester and her mystery house…
What I liked: nods to her actual genius and philanthropy (which tend to get lost or glossed over when discussing the lore of the house); the art is fitting for the story

What I disliked (and earned the so-so rating): the pacing is weird and I don‘t know where this story is going - this book collects three issues which doesn‘t feel like enough to ground/set this particular story.

Dragon I remember visiting that house years ago. It definitely had a creepy atmosphere 💚🐉 11mo

I‘m slightly late to the party (I kept putting off watching cause I was so worried I‘d be disappointed) - but I‘m actually really enjoying this ambitious adaptation. Is it perfect? Not quite. Is it better than I expected? Absolutely. I‘ve got minor quibbles (and 4 episodes to finish off), but I‘m comfortable saying I like this adaptation and kudos to Netflix for pulling it off. 😄

Persuasion | Jane Austen

Not even halfway through watching this new Netflix adaptation and my first and foremost thought: what is this nonsense? (And: Will I be able to finish this?!)
Granted I‘m a little precious/protective because this is my favorite Austen novel (and one of my all time fave books) - but this is not a good movie imho.
What does everyone else think???

DGRachel I can‘t bring myself to watch it, yet. Persuasion is my favorite Austen and just the previews make me want to throw the book through my TV screen and cancel my Netflix subscription. That said - if others enjoy it, awesome. I‘m not criticizing anyone for it. 1y
Liatrek @DGRachel Agree 100% I just can‘t watch it. I hate that it‘s at the top of my suggested viewing and I even get a glimpse of the trailer again. I sooo wanted a good adaption 😢 1y
Graywacke I‘m reading Persuasion now for the first time. I‘ve heard some older adaptations were very good. But I‘ve only heard worry about this latest one. 1y

ravenlee It‘s my favorite Austen, too, and the previews just make me cringe. I‘ve seen nothing but poor reviews so far. Why can‘t we have nice things? 1y
Leftcoastzen Someone else on Litsy posted this link I think but in case you didn‘t see it.I don‘t think I will even try to watch it https://lithub.com/from-fleabag-to-persuasion-the-rise-of-the-mussy-haired-self-... 1y
LiteraryinLawrence Thanks for sharing that article @Leftcoastzen 1y
DGRachel @Liatrek @ravenlee @Leftcoastzen @LiteraryinLawrence @Eyelit One of the things that concerns me is that this adaptation will be the first experience some people have of Persuasion and Anne, and to see how much just the preview alters her character hurts my heart. It does such a disservice to the author and the book. 1y
RosePressedPages Persuasion is also my favorite. Have you seen the 1995 movie? If so, what did you think? 1y
Eyelit @DGRachel @Liatrek I think I should have listened to my gut when I saw the trailer 😆 I can see why some might like it - but for me it missed the mark completely in tone and the portrayal of Anne 😩 (edited) 1y
Eyelit @ravenlee yes! Why can‘t we have nice things?!? 1y
Eyelit @Leftcoastzen that article was great! thanks for sharing! 1y
Leftcoastzen @Eyelit you‘re welcome! It‘s been a long time since I‘ve read the book, thinking I‘ll reread it!😁 1y
Eyelit @DGRachel I agree with you and do wonder how people will react if this is their first experience with Austen and then be utterly surprised if/when they try to read the books (if they even get to that point or if they‘ll just write her off (as so many have in the past) as a embittered romance writer) 1y
Eyelit @MadelineMcCrae the ‘95 adaptation is my favorite (maybe because it was the first adaptation I saw for Persuasion) I felt that the subdued tone and the wonderfully understated performances by the two leads were fab. I have mixed feelings about the 2007 version… the cast is wonderful but I really hated all the looks directly into the camera 😅 1y
Eyelit @Leftcoastzen I think I need a reread to get this adaptation out of my brain completely 😅 1y
SamAnne I‘m starting to feel like I need to hate watch this…… 1y
julesG I watched it last night. And I'm not sure what to think. I'm sure this very modern approach will make Austen interesting for the younger people, but all in all my conclusion is: The book was better! 1y
Librarybelle My gut reaction, based solely on the trailer, is I‘ll hate it. That is so not Anne!! But, I also feel like I cannot say anything until I actually watch it…but am I really ready to do that??? I‘m a firm believer if it brings someone to the original subject matter, then it does have a service. Mindelan I‘m not sure what they were trying to accomplish there. It felt like someone trying to write a modern retelling, but still set in the regency period? They cut out so much of the subtlety that makes Austen‘s work good, and the modern slang was weird. If they wanted to modernize it, they should have just done it. The actress they chose for Mary would have been great as an influencer of some kind. 1y
Eyelit @SamAnne yeah, hate watching it may be the best mindset for this one 😅 1y
ravenlee @Eyelit @DGRachel @Liatrek @Leftcoastzen @LiteraryinLawrence @MadelineMcCrae @SamAnne @julesG @Librarybelle the article was very interesting! And I agree that bringing someone to reading the books has value. I‘ve been thinking about a screenwriter I saw once talking about adapting books (it was The Count of Monte Cristo) and how you can‘t write the book - it‘s already been done and done well or they wouldn‘t be adapting it in the first place. 👇🏻 1y
ravenlee And I get that argument, I really do. You can‘t just pull all the dialogue out of a book and film it. But if the idea is to read the book and then write a film version, I have to wonder who involved in Persuasion actually read the book, because they missed all the important stuff. Or did someone just use a synopsis and character list? It sounds like a student writing their essay from Cliffs Notes instead of the book. 1y
Eyelit @julesG I agree that this a very modern approach - and I‘m all for that if it stays true to the essence of the source material (it doesn‘t have to be exactly as it was on the page to do that either) - but this is not Anne Elliot. I don‘t know who this character is but she‘s not remotely Anne Elliot 😩 and yes, the book was better 😆 (edited) 1y
Eyelit @Mindelan omg Mary basically stole every scene she was in. One of the few characters who was true to what the essence of the character was in the book (if a little off with the language ha ha) 1y
Eyelit @ravenlee that was my thought when watching this. Did ANYONE actually read the book at all? Cause you‘re right, it feels like some got the cliff notes and went from there… it also feels like they saw the popularity of the 2020 Emma and said ‘I can do that‘ - and just kind of keyboard smashed their way through the writing of this script 1y
julesG I was wondering whether I just didn't remembered the book correctly. It's been a few years (cough, decades) since I read it. @Eyelit @Mindelan Yes, Mary the influencer would have been a great take on it. I agree, a modern retelling might have been better. Would have made me cringe less for sure. 1y
DGRachel @Eyelit Yes! I‘m fine with modernizing classics (I think Clueless is fun) as long as they don‘t pretend to be anything else. Based on the previews, that‘s what it feels like they did here. It‘s a modern script masquerading as a period piece. And yes-who is that Anne? That‘s a Caroline Bingley in Anne Elliot skin! 1y
Mindelan @Eyelit Agreed! When Anne twisted her ankle, I paused it and told my spouse “this is not cannon, but I am very interested to see how Mary reacts” and I was not disappointed 😂 1y
RosePressedPages @Eyelit I‘m glad someone else loves the 1995 version! It‘s my go to comfort movie ☺️ (edited) 1y

Not sure if this is an ongoing trend (and it‘s just new to me) or if this a new trend in manga… regardless, these are two recent impulse grabs from the library based on ‘cuteness and whimsical‘ scale. Here‘s hoping they live up to my expectations. 😄 #libraryhaul #manga

Kenyazero They look adorable! 1y
