I‘ve read Thoreau‘s work, but I loved this graphic novel, which gives some highlights from his time at Walden pond. It‘s simple and straightforward and uses language and situations presented in Thoreau‘s actual book. It‘s a great way to sample Thoreau if you are interested, but don‘t want to tackle the original book.

I thought this was an enjoyable companion to Walden. The art style is cozy, and each page masterfully distills the essence of each part of Thoreau‘s book. The quotes and paraphrasing (only when necessary) flowed nicely throughout and felt like a beautiful nod to this work. This book focused mostly on Thoreau‘s nature themes and left out most of his social commentary.

Select passages from Walden accompanied by simple illustrations that respect and elevate his message. This sort-of graphic novel covers why he went to Walden, his understanding of humankind, briefly touches on the beginnings of Civil Disobedience and ends with his return to Concord. An excellent introduction to Thoreau / Walden; enjoyed it so much I‘m considering purchasing it so that I can refer back when I need a little grounding.
