3 posts | 11 read | 3 to read
"Once upon a Time" Is Timeless Wielding a sword as deftly as an embroidery needle, Mulan is unlike any other girl in China. When the emperor summons a great army, each family must send a male to fight. Tomboyish Mulan is determined to spare her aging father and bring her family honor, so she disguises herself and answers the call. But Mulan never expects to find a friend, let alone a soul mate, in the commander of her division, Prince Jian. For all of Mulan's courage with a bow and arrow, is she brave enough to share her true identity and feelings with Prince Jian?

UGH. Ok Mulan is my FAVORITE folklore figure so I'm powerless against any retelling of her story but no one can get it right! This Mulan is "not like other girls" but don't worry--if you forget she'll remind you every 5 pages or so ?. Halfway through and she hasn't even gone off to war yet, then her and the prince are "soulmates" within 10 pages of meeting and the battle to SAVE CHINA takes 5 pages! Uncool.

Johanna414 Bummer! I was obsessed with this series as a preteen but our library didn‘t have the Milan retelling so I never read it. I‘m rereading the Little Mermaid one right now and it‘s not living up to my memories at all... 7y
BiblioBimbo I was obsessed with them too and I remember that one! I missed this one then so I wanted to read it but it was so disappointing. I think they're just too short to do much with the story imo 7y
