Cries for Help, Various
Cries for Help, Various: Stories | Padgett Powell
4 posts | 5 read
Padgett Powell's third collection, Cries for Help, Various, includes 44 stories, some very short, that follow his mentor Donald Barthelme's advice that "the wacky mode must break readers' hearts." The surrealistic and comical terrain of most of the stories is grounded in their real preoccupation with longing, fear, work, loneliness, and cultural nostalgia. The language and thinking is lofty and low, cranky and heartfelt, exuberant and inconsolable. Powell's characters are rebels against convention whose concerns are less for independence than for the maintenance of sanity, the romance of giving up.

Okay, Littens, I could use your help. As Time Goes By is a favorite TV show for both my Mom and I. Are there any books out there like it? Whether it's a similar story, or tone, or humor, doesn't matter, I'm just looking for anything similar to this show we both adore. Thanks in advance!

ultrabookgeek I looooooooove this show! So much sass, grumpiness and misunderstandings! 8y
LauraBrook @sharimichele YES! Plus I laugh out loud at least once per show. Recently the one was on where Jean thinks Lionel needs a hearing aid. At the end when he comes home and says that they removed quite a lot of wax and he let him see it, and then he throws the bag of sausages onto the counter? Makes me laugh so hard! And I love Judi's laugh. Ok sorry, will stop rambling now. Glad to see another fan of the show! My RL friends don't get it. Their loss! 8y
[DELETED] 3216391035 I could watch these episodes over & over and never get tired of them! Judi Dench rocks! Unfortunately I'm not sure I know of anything similar...but wish I did! 8y

LauraBrook @Basia I know, they're so comforting and wonderful. Hopefully someone will have some suggestions, keep your eyes on this space. 👀 8y
ultrabookgeek @LauraBrook have you ever watched Miranda or Vicar of Dibley? British humor also makes me laugh out loud almost every episode in a way that doesn't happen with American tv. I'm sitting here thinking of a book that is similar. I know I read a book where an old man accidentally checks into a nursing home and tries to escape which was funny but can't remember the name! 8y
AliceInWonderLibrary Not books but Judi Dench was also in a show called A Fine Ronance that was quite a laugh. I also second Vicar of Dibley, I think I have watched that series 4 times. So funny! 8y
LauraBrook @sharimichele Same here! Brit humor is my sense of humor, mostly. (I don't get The Mighty Boosh.) Yes! I own and love both Miranda and VofD. Other series I own are Black Books, the Boom Club, Hex, Green Wing, Teachers, Jonathan Creek, some French & Saunders, Two Fat Ladies, Who Do You Think You Are, plus a bunch of other shows that were on PBS. No problem here! 😉😉 8y
LauraBrook @AliceInWonderLibrary Oh yes, is forgotten about A Fine Romance! That was cute, it was nice to see Judi and her husband in something together. The Vicar is hilarious! Mom and I will quote bits of it (and Little Britain) back and forth and laugh probably harder than we should. Now I want to stay home and watch Brit TV today instead of work! 8y
LauraBrook What about any other series you've enjoyed, any genre? 8y
LeahBergen Have you watched Keeping Up Appearances with your Mom? 8y
LauraBrook @LeahBergen Yes! She got the series on DVD for Christmas a few years ago. The Bucke... I mean Boo-kays, are so funny! I think Daisy is my favorite. 🌼 8y
LeahBergen I like "our Rose" and her lecherous ways with the "dishy vicar" ? 8y

So far...bizarre. But not necessarily in a bad way. I'm definitely not bored.
