Ten Nights Dreaming
Ten Nights Dreaming: and The Cat's Grave | Natsume Soseki
3 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
A murderer discovers his true nature from a talking infant, a samurai is frustrated in his attempts to meditate, and a dying man bestows his hat on a friend in these surrealistic short stories. The dream-like, open-ended tales by the father of Japanese modernist literature offer thought-provoking reflections on fear, death, and loneliness. Their settings range from the Meiji period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the era in which the tales were written, to the prehistoric Age of the Gods; the twelfth-century Kamakura period, in which the samurai class emerged; and the remote future. A scholar of British literature, author Natsume S?seki (18671916) was also a composer of haiku, kanshi, and fairy tales. The stories of Ten Nights Dreaming, which were originally published as a newspaper serial, constitute milestones of Japanese fantasy. Like S?seki's other writings, they have had a profound effect on readers, writers, and filmmakers. This edition features an expert new English translation by Matt Treyvaud, who has translated the story "The Cat's Grave" for this work as well.

Casey sleeps in the living room and he was NOT impressed with how late I stayed up tonight. I finally took pity on him and tucked up in bed to read this short Sōseki collection.

It took me to 11:12 for the Readathon. I‘ll probably read a little bit more before I fall asleep, but that‘s basically it for me. I stayed up way later than I expected to and now I‘m sleeeeepy. Gonna go have some dreams of my own. #deweyapril #readathon

batsy That's such a soothing cover. 5y
xicanti @batsy the book was somewhat less soothing. I wouldn‘t be surprised to hear David Lynch cite it as an influence on the Twin Peaks revival. (edited) 5y
batsy Oh, that sounds really intriguing! 5y
xicanti @batsy it really was. Made for perfect bedtime reading, too. 5y

Quick read into the world of Soseki. Ten small stories of dreams that were quite fun to delve into. It would be a nice introduction to his prose.
