Written by sisters Frances and Ginger Park and illustrated by Debra Reid Jenkins, this HF picture book tells the story about a Korean girl named Soo & her escape to freedom. Soo lived in North Korea, but the people quickly lost their freedom & many escaped to South Korea before the Korean War broke out. Soo‘s father tells her that they need to escape across the river. MeganKlein Based on their own mother‘s “freedom trip” across the 38th parallel (the line that divides North and South Korea), the authors wrote this story to share the real-life experiences that many Koreans faced during the Korean War and even today. This book is a great resource for teaching about social injustices around the world, and it can also be used as a RA to introduce the Korean War. This book has also won the Int‘l Reading Association Award. (edited) 5y

This lesson plan is used to develop students‘ critical thinking skills and foster whole-class discussion. This book would be perfect for a RA and can be used when teaching social studies in upper primary grades. EL strategy 42 (have students use timelines) and UDL principle 3.1 (supply background knowledge) are ways to help students understand this text on a deeper level.
