Living with Oral Allergy Syndrome
Living with Oral Allergy Syndrome: A Gluten and Meat-Free Cookbook for Wheat, Soy, Nut, Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Allergies | Danielle LeBlanc
2 posts
A guide to living with oral allergy syndrome, the leading cause of food allergies. 50-90% of people with hay fever suffer from related food allergies, known as oral allergy syndrome (OAS) or pollen-food allergies. Birch, grass, ragweed and latex allergies can cause cross-reactions with foods, making it difficult and dangerous for some people to eat a wide variety of healthy foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables, soy, nuts and wheat. Despite being the leading cause of food allergies, oral allergy syndrome is little understood and often goes unrecognized, unreported and undiagnosed. Those with it often feel frustrated by the lack of information about it, and may be confused about what to eat. This book will help people to: Understand what OAS is and learn its possible origins and treatments Manage hay fever and food allergies Avoid foods with hidden allergens Deal with eating out and cooking at home Find nutritious snacks and basic meal suggestions Cook around restrictions and maintain a balanced diet Take control of health and overall wellbeing And it includes over 60 healthy recipes for oral allergy syndrome free of gluten, meat, wheat, soy and OAS related nuts, most of which are also dairy-free or with dairy free options!

Allergy results. I have what is called Oral Allergy Syndrome, in my case related to an allergy to birch made worse by the wasp sting. My reaction to the wasp seems to have been a systemic toxin reaction and not a venim allergy, which is good, but needs to be confirmed by blood tests. In the mean time, I need to cook more the foods that cause reactions and the strawberries in the fruit bar were probably not cooked enough. Information is power.

GypsyKat Allergies suck! Good luck to you! 5y
batsy Glad to hear you're getting the information you need. 5y
tournevis @GypsyKat @batsy Allergies suck, but these won't kill me, which is what is important. 5y

GypsyKat @tournevis Definitely. My husband has a fatal allergy to raw apples. He has to be really careful this time of year. 5y
tournevis @GypsyKat Wow. That's hard. 5y
Itchyfeetreader Information is power good luck getting to the bottom of it 5y
tournevis @Itchyfeetreader We are getting there. 5y
GypsyKat @tournevis It is. He developed it suddenly a few years ago. He‘s always loved apples so he really misses them. We keep an epipen on hand just in case. He can eat cooked apples or pasteurized cider, but anything raw or unpasteurized could kill him. It makes me nervous. 5y
tournevis @GypsyKat Is he sensitive to birch in the spring? Because the allergist told me it's the same protein. 5y
GypsyKat @tournevis Oh yes. He‘s got a class four allergy to birch and a few other trees as well. 5y
tournevis @GypsyKat Well, there you go. 5y
ValerieAndBooks I have allergies to nearly every tree there is (found out after moving to a heavily wooded property lol) and so my allergist told me to watch out for similar-protein fruits and veggies. He said for me, microwaving anything raw for 30 seconds would be adequate. Others might need to be more cautious, though. 5y
tournevis @ValerieAndBooks In my case, I already know that chard, kale, spinach and tea are no-gos, no matter how cooked. I just can't ever have any. Same with most berries. Does not look good now, new things have popped up. Strawberries have been a huge no since I've been about ten. What's funny is that I was told I was not allergic to them. The surprise is lobster. I had never reacted to it EVER until today's test. 5y
ValerieAndBooks Yikes. At least you know what to avoid now! 5y
Clare-Dragonfly I‘m glad you have more of an explanation! I hope it‘s not too much of a change to your lifestyle to cook your fruits. I‘d be heartbroken to have to give up fresh fruit. 5y
tournevis @Clare-Dragonfly I'll adapt. In the end, it's not a major thing, like a leg or an eye. It's just cooking. The lobster thing will certainly be the hardest to give up. 5y
Lcsmcat It‘s hard to make these kinds of changes! But I‘m glad you‘re getting some answers. 5y
tournevis @Lcsmcat I can be, but most of the foods I can't eat were already out of my diet. I'll adapt. I'd rather have Nutella in my life, but I don't need Nutella, for example. 5y
