4 posts | 6 read | 1 to read
From the bestselling author of The Ice Cream Girls, The Woman He Loved Before and My Best Friend's Girl, an emotional story about love, identity and the meaning of family. 'Where are you coming from with that accent of yours?' he asks. 'Nowhere,' I reply. 'I'm from nowhere.' 'Everyone's from somewhere,' he says. 'Not me,' I reply silently. Clemency Smittson was adopted as a baby and the only connection she has to her birth mother is a cardboard box hand-decorated with butterflies. Now an adult, Clem decides to make a drastic life change and move to Brighton, where she was born. Clem has no idea that while there she'll meet someone who knows all about her butterfly box and what happened to her birth parents. As the tangled truths about her adoption and childhood start to unravel, a series of shocking events cause Clem to reassess whether the price of having contact with her birth family could be too high to pay...

Clemency is a Black woman who was adopted, her adopted parents are white. From an early age Clemancy has been aware that her parents don't look like her, that people are visually shocked when she introduces her mum and dad.
By a massive coincidence Clemency meets her birth family.
This is such a good read. So many lies, secrets, generational trauma, a ton of complicated love and conversations on race and unconscious bias.

Mehso-so

I found this book slow to get into but when I got about a quarter of the way through, I started to enjoy it - especially the mishmash of present day and flashbacks. However, a plot twist appeared which I felt wasn't really necessary. All in all, it was ok but not necessarily a book I'd read again.

I adore Dorothy Koomson ❤️ Her unceasing wit, strong characters and unwillingness to shy away from hard subjects, like adoption or the death of a child, makes her one of my favourite authors. Just don't read her books on public transport unless you're okay with blubbering like a baby in public! 😭
