Something is wrong in the house that Lin's family has rented; Lin is sure of it. The clocks tick too slowly. Frost covers the flowerbed, even in a rain storm. And when a secret key marked "Twistrose" arrives for her, Lin finds a crack in the cellar, a gate to the world of Sylver. This frozen realm is the home of every dead animal who ever loved a child. Lin is overjoyed to be reunited with Rufus, the pet she buried under the rosebush. But together they must find the missing Winter Prince in order to save Sylver from destruction. They are not the only ones hunting for the boy this night. In the dark hides a shadow-lipped man, waiting for the last Winter Prince to be delivered into his hands. Exhilarating suspense and unforgettable characters await the readers of this magical adventure, destined to become a classic.

This book reminded me a bit of the Chronicles of Narnia in its magical other world and its talking animal characters. The story is still very original. A little girl is transported into a world where all the human's pets go when they pass on. Not all pets play nicely, though, and the girl must save the world before the villain's evil plan is carried out! Great juvenile fiction read.

Recommended especially for ages 9-12, or thereabouts. I enjoyed it too, as it was original and better written than a lot of best sellers I could name for that age group. My daughter loved it. The vocabulary was a bit challenging, so she only read 15-20p per day, but she was utterly hooked after a few chapters. She had frequent outbursts of, "No! Don't!", and "I knew it!". We will be reading the next book too.

tpixie Pretty cover too! 7y

When Lin gets a mysterious package with an even stranger key, she dives headlong into adventure. Behind the door she is greeted by her her beloved pet who had just passed away. Except now he's dressed, taller than her, and can speak. She discovers a whole village filled with animals who were loved by children when they were alive. But this peaceful village is under threat and only she can save it. A cute but dense adventure story for kids.
