City of Thieves: A Novel | David Benioff
post image

1. City of Thieves was an enjoyable book club read, set in the snow during the siege of Leningrad. ❄️
2. Since I listen to so many audiobooks, but my TBR shelves are overflowing, I plan to read at least one “book on paper” each month. 📖
3. Grateful for Litsy and for my book club! 📚🍷

A Gentleman's Murder | Christopher Huang

Read two books this weekend. Although very different (a murder mystery and a reflection on art and spirituality), both referenced the trauma of World War I. Huang‘s characters coped with shell shock and the effects of mustard gas and Madeleine L‘Engle‘s father was a WWI vet disabled from lung damage due to mustard gas. #NewYearSpecial @Andrew65

Happy Birthday to @gradcat and congratulations on your 10k milestone! Thanks for creating a #Birthdaygiveaway ! 1. I‘ve tagged The 11th book in Louise Penny‘s Inspector Gamache series, which is set in Quebec. 2. To make Kir, you pour a little creme de cassis in a wine glass and top with white wine. For New Year‘s Eve you might want to try a Kir Royale, which is the same except with champagne 🍾 instead of regular white wine.

The Patience Stone | Atiq Rahimi

Pickpick

The title refers to a Persian tale of a mythical stone that absorbs the pain of others. In this case, the “stone” is a comatose Afghan man whose wife confesses her secret thoughts to her unresponsive husband as war rages around them. Although I disliked the ending, I gave the book a good rating because the story has really stayed with me. #WorldTour @JulietteGF

Adventures-of-a-French-Reader Yes, the end is very violent!!! But not every story has a happy end, and I feel like it is sooo close to the reality... 3y

Atticus Finch is a #LiteraryCrush - helped along by Gregory Peck in the movie. I am reluctant to read Go Set a Watchman because I heard it would forever tarnish my image of Atticus. I'm open to being talked into it though. #FiestyFeb @RealLifeReading

8little_paws Doooooon't do it!!!! 5y
Krysta I have the same problem. I want to read it... but I also don't want to read it. 5y
Louise I would say you shouldn't let what you've heard stop you from reading Go Set A Watchman. It's a thought-provoking book about Scout's individuation, learning to see her adulated father as a flawed human being just like everyone else. Atticus is a window into some of the societal ideas at that time in history. For the reader, it's also a chance to see that basically good people--people we love--sometimes embrace ideas vastly different from our own. 5y
See All 12 Comments
BookishMarginalia Go Set a Watchman is not a sequel, so it shouldn't affect your understanding of TKAM Atticus. It's the first draft of a novel and Lee's first approach to the themes and ideas that became TKAM. It is much more argumentative than TKAM, and harder hitting on the still-ongoing fight of Southern states against federalism. 5y
[DELETED] 206653737 I'm rereading To Kill a Mockingbird currently so I can read Go Set A Watchman. I was thinking about Atticus when I posted my crush this morning, he's a good one too! 5y
CocoReads I pre ordered Watchman and haven't been able to read it yet because I heard the same thing. 5y
Alfoster Love me some Atticus too❤! (And didn't love Go Set a Watchman either). 5y
Tanner I found it very interesting to read GSAW - it's very rough but yes, very hard-hitting and thought-provoking. Read it knowing that's not a sequel, it's the first draft of what would become TKAM, and thus shouldn't tarnish your image of Atticus. The names may be the same, but they're not really the same characters. 5y
Amandajoy I agree with @tanner on GSAW. It felt like a first draft with different characters. I was annoyed with Scout too. I still love Atticus even after reading it. 5y
Kimzey @8little_paws @Krysta @Louise @BookishMarginalia @bookish22 @CocoReads @Alfoster @Tanner @Amandajoy Thanks for all your comments. I feel more inclined to give it a try! But I may reread TKAM first. 5y
readinginthedark I'm with @Louise --GSaW shows a really honest reflection of people and the times, not the idealized character people have made of Atticus since. I really appreciated it, but flawed characters feel more real to me. 5y
