Coming Up for Air
Coming Up for Air | Sarah Leipciger
4 posts | 1 read | 6 to read
A lyrical, powerful, and richly textured novel about three lives that intertwine in poignant and surprising ways. LInconnue is a young woman lost in turbulent Paris at the turn of the nineteenth century. Pieter is a Norwegian toymaker and father to two young children in the 1950s. Anouk is a contemporary Canadian suffering from cystic fibrosis, a medical condition that leaves her constantly fighting for air, swimming through the boundary between life and death as she awaits a lung transplant that could save her life. The way their stories intersect takes us effortlessly through time and space, revealing how our lives can be changed by strangers ? and how we, in turn, can shape events far beyond our apparent reach. An unforgettable novel about what lives on beyond us, Coming Up for Air exists in the moment between the exhale and the inhale and the space between water and air. It explores the cycle of life and the nature and transcendental power of storytelling.

Two #CanLit titles on the go. One from my own shelves (tagged book) and one just picked up from the library.

We're under Stay at Home orders again for 4 weeks, it's going to be raining most of the week (we had ducks in our yard this morning!) So what better way to spend the days right?

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

Pickpick

Three storylines—19th century Paris, 20th century Norway, 21st century Canada—tenderly braided into a remarkable novel. Based on a true story. Full review and Giller prediction is on my blog: https://lindypratch.blogspot.com/2020/09/coming-up-for-air-by-sarah-leipciger.ht...

…a little girl sat, plucking white petals off a daisy, reciting the prophetic verse: Il m‘aime un peu, beaucoup, passionnément, à la folie, pas du tout. The daisy was scalped bald and the girl dispassionately flicked the limp, unadorned flower over the balcony railing, as it appeared the object of her desire loved her not at all.
