The Way: Through a Field of Stars
The Way: Through a Field of Stars | Brian John Skillen
2 posts | 1 read
Love and loyalty are tested in The Way: Through a Field of Stars as Princess Isabella of France and her companions travel through foreign lands, unlock the Templars’ secret codes, and discover the wisdom of the Camino de Santiago. This historical fantasy is the first book in a trilogy that combines the cipher-breaking mystery of the Da Vinci Code with the life-altering spiritual lessons of The Alchemist.
With the fall of Jerusalem and Rome in turmoil, the most popular pilgrimage in the medieval world became the Camino de Santiago. Pilgrims from across the empire walked thousands of miles to pray at the feet of St. James, hoping that their pilgrimage would pay the price of their sins. “The Camino will provide,” is a saying pilgrims have used for over a millennium. In The Way: Through a Field of Stars, our heroes learn that what the Camino de Santiago provides isn’t always what they want, but it is exactly what they need to fulfill their life’s purpose.
In 1306 Princess Isabella of France takes a pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago to purify herself of a sin she cannot forgive. Her convoy is attacked, and she is unexpectedly reunited with her one true love, Etienne LeRue, who has become a novice Knights Templar. Ripped away from each other in their youth, both Etienne and Isabella never thought they would meet again. Now, they face a choice: to love or to remain loyal? Etienne is tied to his vow as a Templar, and Isabella to the will of her father, King Philip IV, who wants to destroy the Templars.
As King Philip plots to disband the Templars, Isabella and Etienne struggle to cross Spain avoiding the Moors, wild animals, and Immortal Shadows. On their Camino, a group of unlikely companions unites around Isabella and Etienne. Together, they form a bond stronger than family. This bond is tested when they discover a hidden code in the cathedrals that leads to the Templars’ most valued treasure. Will Isabella betray Etienne and her friends by delivering this secret into her father’s hands? Or will she protect those whom she loves?
