I wanted to love this book, but it felt strangely muted and anticlimactic. The main plot point alluded to in the summary happened 2/3 into the book and was resolved in 30 pages. There was a subplot about the LI's hyper-religious family that resolved so neatly it felt unreal and unsatisfying. Yet it's about a trans guy coming to terms with being open and the relationships between trans people were amazing. So 3.5⭐️ and I'd read this author again.

This was basically your typical trans and gay high school romance, just with sports thrown in. They‘re fun and I enjoy reading them, but I wish there were more without homophobia and transphobia facing the characters. Anyone know any good books that fit that description? (4⭐️)

Sweet, feel-good coming out story. Has some of the usual coming out/coming of age dramas but it was super cute and reassuring. Def recommend it for some teenage quiltbang romance 💘

A wonderfully sweet story about Spencer a trans teen trying to find his way in a new private school. He joins the football team, develops a crush on a teammate and joins the QSA but isn't out as transgender after a mysterious but definitely awful episode at his old school. Perhaps it's a teeny bit trite and the issues are resolved surprisingly easily but I will take it in such a warm, positive, big-hearted story of trans masculine experience.

Loving this ridiculously sweet YA romance and this line made me tear up (at work, no less). I think a lot of LGBTQ+ people need to hear this, especially trans people who pass ❤️ 🏳️‍🌈

Isaac Fitzsimons debut YA novel mixes trans rights, romance and sports fiction to mixed effect. It‘s great to read something with a black trans boy main character and although the romance is a little predictable, Fitzsimons sensitively shows the anxieties and issues he has to navigate. However there is a lot going on plot and character wise so that some elements, notably Spencer‘s autistic brother and Justice‘s religious family, feel tacked on.

This is such an important book, especially with all of the trans exclusionary laws being put in place around the world. Spencer just wants to play soccer and feel free to date the boy he likes, and performative allies need to do better.

Spencer is starting a new school and unsure how much of himself he can safely share as he‘s transgender and violent threats led to him leaving his last school. As he joins the soccer team and starts to feel a part of something it becomes less clear what is riskier-sharing who he truly is or never reaching for the life he wants. Wonderful characters and so much love and warmth inhabit this book making it lovely to curl up with and hard to put down.
