Feminism, Interrupted
Feminism, Interrupted: Disrupting Power | Lola Olufemi
6 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
Plastered over t-shirts and tote bags, the word 'feminist' has entered the mainstream and is fast becoming a popular slogan for our generation. But feminism isn't a commodity up for purchase; it's a weapon for fighting against injustice. This revolutionary book reclaims feminism from consumerism through exploring state violence against women, reproductive justice, transmisogyny, sex work, gendered Islamophobia and much more, showing that the struggle for gendered liberation is a struggle for justice, one that can transform the world for everyone.

A thoughtful and challenging review of the process by which the dominant/dominating patriarchal/capitalist structures seek to, and to a large degree have, subsumed radical opposition, incorporating dissenting narratives into the mainstream to perpetuate systems of oppression through liberal feminism, gender-critical 'feminism' and white West-centric feminism. Olufemi centres radical feminist efforts to move global society towards a collective 👇

Bookwomble ... non-authoritarian position in which national boundaries are dropped, resources are shared, and people come together in solidarity rather than in a dog-eat-dog scramble for dominance. 2y

"Abolition feminism begins at home - it resists the desire to catastrophise ('what do we do with all the murderers?') and realises that murder is not only uncommon in many contexts but is also entirely avoidable."
- "Entirely avoidable" is a big claim to make about murder without any cogent justification for that statement. I want it to be true, but... GIVE ME DETAILS!!!

Fighting the patriarchy one culturally-conditioned assumption at a time... It's a long road getting from here to there.

This book was excellent and full of reminders and food for thought on feminism and it's complexities. Feminism is much more than a commodity or a label. It's work, and it's intersectional.

WomanistBibliophile Feminism is not about hope. It‘s a political, historical, materialist analysis for understanding the conditions under which women live and constructing scientific methods for the amelioration of these conditions 3y
BekaReid @WomanistBibliophile I agree feminism needs to look at, address, and ameliorate those conditions. But I also believe there is a place for hope in the discussion. Hope as defined by an expectation and desire for that change. There's definitely much to unpack in the context/definition of feminism; I dare say there is no singular writing/book that can address it fully but many together allow for discussion and work to bring about that amelioration. 3y

Just over halfway through the year and this is how my Goodreads challenge is currently shaping up. I have no idea how many books I actually want to aim for now but I'm just going to keep reading books which interest me. My challenge can be viewed at https://www.goodreads.com/user_challenges/20758308 and please, if you have any recommendations for me then just let me know.

“There is no way to adequately describe what gender is. Every
definition does a disservice to the shifting, multiple and complex
set of power relations that come to shape a person‘s gender.“

WomanistBibliophile A term without a definition is useless for communication. Considering that our feminist foresisters did extensive painstaking research defining gender and its implications, impacts and history, the above quote is disrespectful to this work, as well as taking something meaningful and turning it meaningless 3y
