Mary Anning grew up in a seaside town in England. As a child, she loved hunting for interesting rocks, seashells and fossils with her father. When Mary was eleven years old, her father died and Mary used her hobby to collect trinkets to sell. In fact, the famous tongue twister "She sells seashells by the seashore" was written about her!Soon she made an important discovery. Mary noticed something strange along the shore, grabbed her hammer, and chiseled out something big--it was a skeleton of a creature no one had ever seen before. Mary had discovered an ichthyosaurus, which is Latin for "fish lizard." The word "dinosaur" didn't even exist at that time. She hired workmen to carry it to her home. A wealthy businessman bought it and placed it on display in a museum. Her "fish lizard" find shook the scientific world. Before this, nobody had realized a species could become extinct. Mary's discovery was the beginning of the field paleontology. Many of Mary's fossils have been on display in museums and were written about in books and journals, but at that time, she didn't get any credit--because she was a woman! Here's to giving her the credit she deserves!

Another historical figure I wasn't familiar with! Great for the classroom library, especially for a science classroom.

“Just like long-buried fossils, Mary's achievements have slowly been uncovered and shared with the world. Her daring discoveries helped form paleontology- the branch of geology that uses fossils to study prehistoric life.“

Talks about Mary Anning's life and work. She contributed so much to the field of paleontology and is regarded as a pioneer in paleontology. This book talks about how she was disregarded at the time because she was a woman- she could not even go to university.

This book will create very excellent and fascinating discussions about history when children hear this story. The book is beautifully illustrated and a fun read. Great vocabulary is used and it's very well written for younger children.

This is a great book to introduce paleontology and dinosaurs with younger classes to get them interested in paleontology.

Dinosaur Lady: The Daring Discoveries of Mary Anning, the First Paleontologist is a biography about a woman from the 1800s named Mary Anning. Mary lived on the seaside and found fossils to sell to tourists, but eventually found dinosaur bones and was interested in learning more about them, and she kept notes and made plenty great discoveries, but was not taken seriously given the time period and her being a woman.
