I love it when a book surprises me. And this one really did. I honestly wasn‘t expecting very much out of it. But this was a fun read that explores first love and also, women‘s sports! It‘s set in the US in 1979 and a new coach has arrived at Susan‘s high school to start a girls‘ soccer team. A fun, funny, feminist read!

I‘ve decided retro reads are my jam. The 70s were a decade of decadence and progression. In the beginning, I thought this was going to be a hormone fueled romp i.e. Porkies. The author did a good job of capturing a 70s feel to an otherwise contemporary coming of age story. It‘s interesting (and disheartening) that after 40 years women are still fighting some stereotypes addressed here. That‘s why this story resonates, no matter the decade.

I enjoyed the retro vibe of my last read. This time around I‘m turning the time machine back even further!
