In keeping with the tone of the stories, my son was childishly amused by the similarity in sound of 'Balzac' and 'ballsack'! It wasn't helped by my wife giggling in the corner! 😤

Newly arrived 1961 Folio Edition illustrated by Mervyn Peake. This was Peake's last commission, & if I hadn't recently read that he struggled to complete the illustrations due to dementia, I wouldn't have known, as they are fine examples of his art. His wife tells of having picked the scenes for him to interpret, and of having to coax him along when his attention wandered, which makes the achievement all the greater, and poignant.
Love this illustrated edition of Balzac we got at the Ferguson Library booksale.
When it‘s too hot to lesson plan, but you do it anyway; and it‘s so hot you can‘t record keep, but you do it anyway; that is the time to get yourself a treat. Heck, let‘s make it two.
This is a strange and interesting collection of stories, mainly taking place during medieval times. Some of the stories made me laugh and some made me cringe. Clearly ideas of consent have changed a lot since these were published in the 1830s.
Rainy afternoons and Balzac.
Ps never read Balzac before so I'm excited ^_^
