All’s fair in love and prank wars For barista and café owner Sari Tomas, Christmas means parols, family and no-holds-barred karaoke contests. This year, though, a new neighbor is throwing a wrench in all her best-laid plans. The baker next door—“some fancy boy from Manila”—might have cute buns, but when he tries to poach her customers with cheap coffee and cheaper tactics, the competition is officially on. And Baker Boy better be ready, because Sari never loses. Foodie extraordinaire Gabriel Capras wants to prove to his dad that his career choice doesn’t make him any less a man. The Laneways might not be Manila, but the close-knit community is the perfect spot to grow his bakery into a thriving business. He wasn’t expecting a gorgeous adversary in the barista next door, but flirting with her makes his heart race, and it’s not just the caffeine. It’s winner takes all this Christmas. And more than one competitor might just lose their heart for the holidays.

Pickpick

This was the perfect start to my holiday reading. De Guzman puts a distinctly Filipino twist on the familiar small business rivalry plot, complete with pranks, mouthwatering food and coffee descriptions, and some serious family issues for both leads. It‘s delightful AND a bit dark; my favourite combo.

And my goodness—Filipino Christmas sounds SO FUN! I want to join the celebration (minus the 4am Masses. I‘ll hit the 9pm ones instead).

xicanti Plus, as I said before, SWEET ON YOU is a great pick for #ReadingAsia2021, and for anyone curious about #romanceclass (the group of Filipino romance writers who work in English). De Guzman doesn‘t Americanize her work, so you get proper cultural immersion. 3y
Butterfinger That sounds wonderful. 3y
xicanti @Butterfinger it totally is. This was my second de Guzman (after THE QUEEN‘S GAME, a contemporary royal romance) and I really like how she writes. 3y

Reading books about bakers always makes me want to bake stuff.

Then again, being awake makes me want to bake stuff.

I had lots of time to kill while this coffee cake baked & cooled, and I filled it with SWEET ON YOU. It‘s lovely so far. People doing #ReadingAsia2021, take note: it‘s chock full of Filipino cultural touchstones alongside the universal small business rivalry plot.

AlaMich Yum! What kind of cake is it? 3y
xicanti @AlaMich just a standard sour cream coffee cake. It‘s my mum‘s favourite. 3y

Coffee + coffee shop romance! I got an ARC of SWEET ON YOU last month, but decided to save it for November instead of rushing to hit release day because it‘s a Christmas story and I feel like November & December are the best months for all things holiday. Now that I‘ve read the first chapter, though, I know Christmas starts in September in the Philippines, which makes this book‘s October release actually a touch behind schedule.

After some debate, I decided to go with five Must-Reads for November:

• a small business Christmas romance
• an apocalyptic chunkster
• a fairy tale-inspired chunkster
• the third book in a series I should‘ve finished years ago
• the fourth book in a series I‘m decidedly so-so on. It might be a quick-bail

If I finish all those without buying anything new, I‘ll officially have La TBR under 125 books by December! Whee!

readordierachel Under 125! 🎉 3y
xicanti @readordierachel next year, I want to get it under 20! Maybe even under 10. 🤞 3y

I‘ve done a pretty awesome job of resisting literary temptation this year, but I fell off the wagon this week and got:

• A CRASH OF FATE by Zoraida Cordova, while it was free
• BLACK HEART, RED RUBY by Teresa Tea, which is currently $0.99 (and available to non-USians at that price, for the first time)
• SWEET ON YOU by Carla de Guzman, a small business Christmas romance that comes out on the 19th

Now, if only I could actually sit and READ.
