The Thief on the Winged Horse
The Thief on the Winged Horse | KATE. MASCARENHAS
2 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
A dazzling mixture of crime, romance, magic and myth from the acclaimed author of The Psychology of Time Travel. The Kendrick family have been making world-famous dolls for over 200 years. But their dolls aren't coveted for the craftmanship alone. Each one has a specific emotion laid on it by its creator. A magic that can make you feel bucolic bliss or consuming paranoia at a single touch. Though founded by sisters, now only men may know the secrets of the workshop. Persephone Kendrick longs to break tradition and learn the family craft, and when a handsome stranger arrives claiming doll-making talent and a blood tie to the Kendricks, she sees a chance to grasp all she desires. But then, one night, the family's most valuable doll is stolen. Only someone with knowledge of magic could have taken her. Only a Kendrick could have committed this crime... Reviews for Kate Mascarenhas: 'Witty, inventive and unflashily wise about human hearts; Mascarenhas's future promises to be an exciting one' GUARDIAN. 'Breathtakingly tender and wryly understated' NEW YORK TIMES. 'Captivating, delightful and thoroughly original' JENNIE MELAMED.

This is an odd book, but a very imaginative tale. It‘s a pretty slow unfolding of events, but not necessarily boring. It‘s hard to pin it to a genre, it‘s mystery, romance fantasy and adventure.

I liked the feminist stance towards the end.

Mrs_B Just realised that is a less than useless review. Apologies all! 1mo
Bette Not at all useless, you mentioned the genres and how imaginative it was, all that is intriguing. 👍 1mo

I wasn't sure if this would be my sort of book as I ike more of a mystery but am branching out my reading horizons so decided to give it a go and I'm glad I did. Its a slow and steady story but has much to keep you reading. I figured out early who had stolen the doll. I liked the descriptive nature of the story. I cant say any of the characters were instantly likeble but it added a darker depth to the story. #Netgalley 4*
