The Kingdom of Light
The Kingdom of Light | Giulio Leoni
3 posts | 2 read
Italy, August 1300. On the banks of the river Arno, a war galley is found with the entire crew dead inside. Dante Alighieri, Prior to the City, suspects poison but the only clue is a mysterious mechanical device. Dante suspects that the damaged device is the work of al-Jazari, the legendary Persian inventor. But others are also after the instrument and will stop at nothing to lay their hands on ita When Dante returns to Florence to work on his magnum opus, the Divine Comedy, he discovers that the renegade monk, Brinando, is stirring up trouble and recruiting Florentines for a new crusade to liberate the Holy Land. Is this disturbing new development somehow linked to the deaths of the galley crew?

Bailedbailed

The blurb on the back cover sounded interesting - Dante dons the detective hat, a medieval mystery exotic setting in Old Italy. I picked it up immediately.
Unfortunately, it's the wrong book for me..
After hours of trying to read. It didn't pull me in.

Mehso-so

Such a promising & intriguing premise - Dante (yes, THAT Dante) as a medieval sleuth, bustin' crime in 14th century Italy. But it didn't deliver. It's hard to say what exactly didn't work for me but it just didn't hang together very well. I was unable to connect to or identify with the MC in any way - I found him unknowable & uninteresting. Some parts were illuminating but I've read similar elsewhere done with more flair & grab. Lacklustre.

Starting this one today and it's another mystery book. Well, it's described as a historical thriller but it's a mystery to me where it came from and why I have it. I suspect it's from a charity shop as it has 25p pencilled on the first page! No recollection whatsoever of buying it.... hope it was worth the price! 🤣
