Treaty Words: For as Long as the Rivers Flow
Treaty Words: For as Long as the Rivers Flow | Aimée Craft
4 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
The first treaty that was made was between the earth and the sky. It was an agreement to work together. We build all of our treaties on that original treaty. On the banks of the river that have been Mishomis's home his whole life, he teaches his granddaughter to listen--to hear both the sounds and the silences, and so to learn her place in Creation. Most importantly, he teaches her about treaties--the bonds of reciprocity and renewal that endure for as long as the sun shines, the grass grows, and the rivers flow. Accompanied by beautiful illustrations by Luke Swinson and an author's note at the end, Aimée Craft affirms the importance of understanding an Indigenous perspective on treaties in this evocative book that is essential for readers of all ages.

A short but powerful read about how the treaties made with the indigenous peoples of North America were not honored and how that has negatively impacted Mother Earth, especially Water.

This book is short but it's words are mighty and it's filled with beautiful illustrations. Told in the format of a grandfather telling his granddaughter stories he explains the true meaning of "Treaty." We should be equally sharing and taking care of the land for all creatures. Thanks @DebbieGrillo for the lend. I'm so happy to hear this book will be in classrooms!

monalyisha 🤩 What‘s the intended age range for this one? 2y
ShelleyBooksie @monalyisha - I'd say this one would be elementary all the way up. My friend has it in her high-school English classroom however my 11 year old read it and really enjoyed it as well. 2y
monalyisha Perfect! Thanks so much! I‘m going to look into purchasing it for my collection at the Library. 💓 2y

This is a must read for every North American. It has helped me understand my relationship to my First Nation's neighbors, the land and all its inhabitants.

"Every sound was outside and inside of them. They knew that all of this would be happening with or without them, that they were such a small part of Creation."

This book had a very calming presence. It gave me some information about the First Nations history. The pictures in the book flow so well the the words it makes you want to fall asleep. It is very interesting book with some challenging words that you could stumble by.
