Sad Sack: Collected Writing | Sophia Al-Maria
1 post
Sad Sack' is a book of collected writing by Sophia Al-Maria, taking feminist inspiration from Ursula K. Le Guin?s 1986 essay 'The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction'; opposing "the linear, progressive, Time?s-(killing)-arrow mode of the Techno-Heroic." Encompassing more than a decade of work, 'Sad Sack' tracks Al-Maria?s speculative journey as a writer, from the first seed of her "premature" memoir, through the coining and subsequent critique of "Gulf Futurism", towards experiments in gathering, containing, welling up and sucking dry.0Sophia Al-Maria was Whitechapel Gallery?s Writer in Residence 2018 ? her exhibition ?BCE? (Whitechapel Gallery, January ? April 2019), draws on a year of performances and readings, culminating in two short creation myth films: one from the ancient past, originating with the Wayuu tribe in northern Colombia; the other from the distant future, made with Victoria Sin.0.

For the past few years, I have participated in #cloakanddaggerchristmas challenge. It's become one of my favourite little holiday joys to spend December reading mysteries. And this year, the IG hosts have decided not to do it. 😭😭😭
I know I can still read some mysteries but part of the fun is picking out titles for each of the prompts. Anyhoo, I'm bummed.
Tagging @batsy @quietjenn since you have joined in the past.

Ruthiella You don‘t want to make up your own prompts? Keep it going here on Litsy? 6mo
HardcoverHearts That‘s a shame! I also love this month of mysteries. 6mo
RaeLovesToRead My plan for this December is to read as many Festive Cosies as I can!!!!! I've got about 6 lined up. Might come up with a hashtag 😊😊 6mo

quietjenn I saw this, and was a bit bummed as well. I only did the last two years, so am thinking of using prompts from before that to do my own version, but not sure yet. I did write them all down though, if that or @Ruthiella ‘s idea appeals to you … 6mo
Ruthiella @quietjenn I made up a list of 8 prompts. If @merelybookish doesn‘t want to, I‘d be happy to host. 6mo
LeahBergen Oh, too bad! 6mo
merelybookish @Ruthiella I would love it if you wanted to host!! Im so excited you have some prompts! 🙏 6mo
merelybookish @HardcoverHearts I think I learned about it through your IG. 😁 6mo
merelybookish @RaeLovesToRead That's awesome! Something at reading mysteries at Xmas makes me really happy. 🙂 6mo
merelybookish @quietjenn I was thinking of maybe recycling past prompts as well but excited @Ruthiella has some ideas! 6mo
merelybookish @LeahBergen Yes, it's funny the little things we look forward to! And how disappointing it is when they don't work out. 6mo
batsy That is indeed a bummer! I was looking forward to it this year, too. 6mo
