The Relatives
The Relatives: A Novel | Camilla Gibb
4 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
From the renowned author of Sweetness in the Belly, The Beauty of Humanity Movement and This Is Happy, comes a bold, urgent and richly imagined novel about what it means to be a family in our modern world. Lila is on a long, painful journey toward motherhood. Tess and Emily are reeling after their ugly separation and fighting over ownership of the embryos that were supposed to grow their family together. And thousands of miles away, the unknown man who served as anonymous donor to them all is being held in captivity in Somalia. While his life remains in precarious balance, his genetic material is a source of both creation and conflict. What does it mean to be a family in our rapidly shifting world? What are our responsibilities to each other with increasing options for how to create a family? As these characters grapple with life-altering changes, they will find themselves interconnected in ways they cannot have imagined, and forced to redefine what family means to them.

First off, I matched my toes to this book 🤣🤣
Second, it‘s amazing. Three disparate characters living out vastly different lives in the slimmest of books with such a HUGE bloody story that somehow comes together at the end. I need to read every single thing CG has ever written

Magpiegem Wow you have totally sold that one to me! Stacked. Plus I feel like I want to always match my nails to my books now! 2y
mcctrish @Magpiegem I think nail matching shall be summer goals for me 🤣🤣 ( of course I‘ve started a book that doesn‘t match 🤦🏻‍♀️) 2y

A mute child of unknown origin found wandering in Toronto. An American man held for ransom in Somalia. A lesbian couple negotiating their breakup and old IVF agreements. Four #audiobook narrators voice four points of view in three lightly-interconnected storylines in this propulsive novel. Our need for family connections and fears about becoming a parent are at the heart of it all. Warm, thoughtful & satisfying. #LGBTQ #CanadianAuthor

Soubhiville Sounds really interesting. 😊 3y

Spring in Edmonton … time to lose myself in a new #audiobook.

ShyBookOwl Oh no! I'm in Ottawa and it was like summer today. What a difference 3y
Lindy @ShyBookOwl It‘s coming down so thick right now we can barely see the houses across the street. I imagine it will melt by tomorrow: our forecast is for a high of 5. 3y
ShyBookOwl @Lindy wow! Best of luck. Hope the rest of your weekend is less snowy. Either way, enjoy the audiobook! 3y

Prairiegirl_reading It was beautiful today here in Manitoba but we are supposed to get anywhere from 5-20 cm of snow starting tomorrow through Tuesday 😩😩😩 I guess we can‘t complain too much because we‘ve had such a mild winter but still I need to complain a little. Lol 3y
Lindy @Prairiegirl_reading Must be the same storm moving across the country. My sister in the Yukon said they woke to deep snow yesterday. 3y
Prairiegirl_reading @Lindy I‘d be fine with it in February but in April, not so much!! 3y
