Sixteen Scandals | Sophie Jordan
3 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
In this irreverent regency romp by New York Times best-selling author Sophie Jordan, newly minted sixteen-year-old Primrose Ainsworth finds herself on a wayward birthday adventure through London with a mysterious hero—perfect for fans of My Lady Jane. The youngest of four daughters, Primrose Ainsworth is used to getting lost in the shuffle. But when her parents decide to delay her debut into English society, Prim hatches a plan to go rogue on the night of her sixteenth birthday. Donning a mask, Prim escapes to the infamous Vauxhall Gardens for one wild night. When her cover is nearly blown, a mysterious stranger intercedes, and Prim finds an unexpected partner in mischief . . . and romance. But when it’s revealed her new ally isn’t who he says he is, her one night of fun may last past dawn. In this frothy regency romp perfect for fans of Austen-esque flirtation and Shakespearean hijinks, sometimes a little scandal can be a good thing.

Pickpick

If you like Bridgerton and Pride and Prejudice (Prim‘s Elizabeth, but her mother and father reminded me of Mr and Mrs Bennet), you must read this book.
It isn‘t very mysterious because the real identity of the stranger is easy to guess, but it‘s so funny and fast and cute to read (the narration of the protagonist is never boring and the couple is lovely).
I‘m not really big on historical novels, but this one I had a blast reading.

Prim has a fun adventure through Vauxhall Gardens in this book, though her birthday scheme inevitably goes awry. As she explores the infamous venue & learns that society & its so-called delights are not as anticipated, she also contemplates her upbringing, what she does & doesn't know. Of course, she also meets the mysterious Jacob who both annoys & intrigues her. The characters were flawed but also sweet & fun, making for a charming romance.

Everything I read in May had at least something I appreciated, even if I didn't love the book overall. And yet, the month has been... a slump.

A lot is going on, both at home & at work, which is why I've been missing for the past month or so.

My summer plan is to revisit unfinished series I've enjoyed and read by mood to try & beat the slump. What are you reading these days, and how do you beat a slump?
