My third book for the Asian Readathon. The challenge for this one: read a book that features a friendship between at least two Asian characters. This book is about five friends at a boarding school who join a writing circle and challenge the culture of abuse at their school. #asianreadathon

For all the messaging this book had about writing as a mechanism for telling a deeper, personal truth, I expected it to dig far deeper into its own characters. I was invested in them all, and I loved the setting, but some of the pain points felt only touched on, not fully processed. Inspired by the author‘s experience as a recent immigrant attending an elite boarding school, this is the story of a group kids, each with their own secret, who come together and find friendship, understanding & the freedom to be themselves when they are selected to be part of a writing group at school. The good, the bad & the ugly of high school are all here in this YA story. On sale 2/15/22.

Today‘s reading is a YA book based on the author‘s experience attending an elite boarding school after living in the United States for only four years. In his note to readers, the author talks about his conflicted feelings about the school where a difficult freshman year was followed by three fantastic years. He also notes there are descriptions of physical & sexual abuse, hazing & homophobia. I‘m anticipating an intense, emotional story.
