Nothing But My Body
Nothing But My Body | Tilly Lawless

People always ask if I enjoy the sex I have with clients or if I have to fake it, as if the two are mutually exclusive and the interplay between them isn't more complex. In actuality, it depends. And I'm not sure what people are threatened by more-that I don't always love it, or that I don't always hate it.' Nothing But My Body is an eight-day journey through the mind of a young woman, a queer sex worker in Australia, as she navigates breakups and infatuation across just over a year. The unnamed narrator's voice is both fierce and vulnerable, defiant and tender, as she explores the interplay between her external and internal world, and the fluctuations of her emotions as love affairs intensify and wane. Her loneliness is assuaged by her beloved chosen family-her friends-and by the beauty of the natural world. Set during the cataclysmic bushfire season of 2019 and into the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown, sex work is the constant backdrop of the story as it moves between Sydney, Berlin, Orange and Bellingen. The beauty of the writing and the moving and deeply engaging sense of compassion that threads through this remarkable novel give true meaning to the concepts of inclusivity and community in surprising and original ways. This stunning, unflinching and lyrical debut is both a rejection of romantic love, a euphoric celebration of the queer community and a reckoning with the body as both abject and joyous.

Scores from the book swap last Sunday! The tagged book is an arc of a prostitute I follow on Instagram who is an interesting thinker. I first saw her speak at the Sydney Writer‘s Festival. I own the actual book so consider this rather special. Liane Moriarty‘s sister‘s arc is in this stack too. I often find arcs at this book swap. I wonder if they are donated from the same person?

A story with an Australian sex worker at the fore - the author herself being a sex worker- navigating her thoughts on social issues, including the nsw bushfires, the pandemic, and how her works influences her.

Just finished my #australianreadinghour I‘m finally getting into this book. I saw Tilly speak at the Sydney Writer‘s Festival many moons ago & had to check myself when she didn‘t fit in with what I imagined a sex worker to be. I have since seen her at the Writer‘s Festival as a participant like me. She says the book is not autobiographical but it sure sounds like her Instagram posts. Maybe that is for clients too. You can tell it‘s her first book.

This one steers hard into the skid of stream-of-consciousness; reading it is like listening to a friend who has been waiting for you and disgorges as soon as you‘ve arrived. It might be confronting for some people who aren‘t familiar with sex work (and that‘s possibly the “point”), but that didn‘t bother me. I just found it a bit too performative and self-involved to really resonate. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/new-releases/
