Kingdom of Liars, 1
Kingdom of Liars, 1 | Nick Martell

In this "excellent fantasy debut, with engaging world-building and a good mix between action and character" (Brandon Sanders, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Stormlight Archive series), a story of secrets, rebellion, and murder are shattering the Hollows, where magic costs memory to use, and only the son of the kingdom's despised traitor holds the truth. Michael is branded a traitor as a child because of the murder of the king's nine-year-old son, by his father David Kingman. Ten years later on Michael lives a hardscrabble life, with his sister Gwen, performing crimes with his friends against minor royals in a weak attempt at striking back at the world that rejects him and his family. In a world where memory is the coin that pays for magic, Michael knows something is there in the hot white emptiness of his mind. So when the opportunity arrives to get folded back into court, via the most politically dangerous member of the kingdom's royal council, Michael takes it, desperate to find a way back to his past. He discovers a royal family that is spiraling into a self-serving dictatorship as gun-wielding rebels clash magically trained militia. What the truth holds is a set of shocking revelations that will completely change the Hollows, if Michael and his friends and family can survive long enough to see it. In a "symphony of loyalty, greed, family, and betrayal" (Tamora Pierce, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Tempests and Slaughter) this spellbinding novel "creates a solid foundation for (hopefully) a much longer narrative to come" (Kirkus Reviews).

Martell sold his debut, tagged book, when he was just 23 which is super cool for him. Super cool for readers is this fast paced, engaging story about a young man branded as a traitor after his father killed the king‘s son. Yeah, it sounds complex & things get even more complex as Michael (the young man) works to uncover the truth of what really happened the night the king‘s son was killed. A solid, fun debut, the first in a trilogy.

This week‘s #bookmail makes me feel a little like a squirrel stocking up for winter except instead of nuts, it‘s big fat books that will keep me entertained when the cold weather sets in…assuming I can hold off on reading these until then! 🐿🌰📚❄️😬

Took a break from the WOT series. I was in a slump because that‘s ALL I‘d been reading for months, so I just wasn‘t reading. Chose this on a whim and loved it. A little Red Queen series with the magic/skills, but includes an interesting exchange because all magic comes with a price. I liked the characters, even though Michael is far too concerned about his legacy (but they admit that). Good read if you‘re a classic YA fantasy fan. 9/10

This debut (audio)book was enjoyable. It was the Unreliable Narrator done right. There were schemes, machinations, betrayl, court juxtapositioning and misdirection aplenty. The audiobook was much more palatable than the print version. If you're having trouble soldiering through then I suggest switching things up and enjoying it auditorily!

The Kingdom of Liars is set in the Kingdom of Hollow, which feels like a medieval society except there are guns. Michael Kingman comes from a family that was once renowned, until his father was arrested and executed for the murder of the King‘s son, ten years earlier. The story revolves around Michael trying to find out whether his father is guilty. There are many interesting characters. The magic system is fascinating. I really liked this book.

This ARC arrived yesterday and I couldn't be more excited about it! I was initially drawn to it because of the cover (yes I'm shallow like that!😁) and also because Brandon Sanderson called it an 'excellent fantasy debut'. 😲 If the modern day king of fantasy liked it than it MUST be good! 👍💕 Also I didn't realize how long it is-just about 600 pages! I love me a good fantasy chunkster! 😍📚💕
