Panpan

Not sure if it‘s a poor translation, or bad writing on the part of Calligarich, but if I ever see the phrase “I was at the end of my tether, truth be told” again, it will be too soon. The characters are awful, which made the supposed depth of feeling between Gavarro and Arianna totally unbelievable, the writing is flat and at times bizarrely repetitive.

Pickpick

I loved this slow, beautiful, devastating story of Leo and his summer in Rome trying to find his way. I‘m so glad it was translated into English. I do wish it had made the #ToB2022 shortlist. It‘s definitely a book that is right up my alley.

BarbaraBB You saying so, I must stack now of course! 2y

Nice little evening with this book. I really love it. I think it should‘ve made the short list! #ToB2022

Mehso-so

This book was on my radar after Ed discussed it on episode 227 of the podcast.
.
I'm not sure it has aged well. The women are all described body parts first, and the narrator for the audiobook has an old-fashioned voice that made me keep upping the speed. It's like Patricia Highsmith Ripley novels without the high stakes or sociopaths. I'd choose Highsmith first every time!
.
So this was a miss for me

I‘m pretty excited about this little library haul courtesy of #ToB2022!

ReadingEnvy I'd go immediately to the shortest one, that's how I roll. Where will you start? 2y
sarahbarnes @ReadingEnvy not a bad strategy! I think I‘m going to start with the tagged one because it really intrigued me! 2y
ReadingEnvy @sarahbarnes I had heard that one discussed on the New York Times Book Review Podcast and I was interested! 2y

merelybookish Ooh I'm jealous! 😍 Of the stack and the library system. 2y
merelybookish I've only read 2 books on the long list. I think my worst showing ...ever? 2y
sarahbarnes @merelybookish it does feel nice to have some perks to living here in exchange for how terrible traffic has gotten in the last year. 😂 I‘ve read 6 I think? Mostly because of the Booker. 2y
vivastory I'm curious about the Lennon. I've read, & enjoyed, two by him 2y
BarbaraBB Lucky you! 2y
sarahbarnes @vivastory great to know that! I‘m really curious about this one, too. 2y

batsy Ooh yes, I'm super envious of that library system. Great stack 😍 2y
BkClubCare Fyi - shortlist is out! 2y
sarahbarnes @BkClubCare it seems too soon! What do you think of the list? 2y
BkClubCare @sarahbarnes - mad that not ONE of the longlisters that I just read made it! 🤣 Glad that a few I didn‘t want to read were skipped 😁 2y
sarahbarnes @BkClubCare 😂😂 I‘ve definitely only read a handful on the shortlist. And as you can see from the photo, I have a few checked out that didn‘t make it. So I‘ll probably try to read some that made the shortlist first. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
