Rise
Rise: How a House Built a Family | Cara Brookins
1 post | 2 read | 6 to read
After escaping an abusive marriage, Cara Brookins had four children to provide for and no one to turn to but herself. In desperate need of a home but without the means to buy one, she did something incredible. Equipped only with YouTube instructional videos, a small bank loan, a mile-wide stubborn streak, Cara built her own house from the foundation up with a work crew made up of her four children. It would be the hardest thing she had ever done. With no experience nailing together anything bigger than a bookshelf, she and her kids poured concrete, framed the walls and laid bricks for their two story, five bedroom house. She had convinced herself that if they could build a house, they could rebuild their broken family. This must-read memoir traces one family s rise from battered victims to stronger, better versions of themselves, all through one extraordinary do-it-yourself project."

Has anyone read this or currently reading it? I am having a hard time getting through it and I'm not sure if I am in a reading slump or this book just isn't for me. Part of me wants to bail but I'm guilting myself about it 😔😔😔😔😔

Lupita.Reads It would be my first bail of 2017! 😫😩😫 7y
JessReads No guilt! Definitely bail - if you want to come back to it later, you can always do that 😊 7y
kerry No guilt! I haven't read it myself, but I find that if it's a mood/slump problem, I tend to go back to my DNFs eventually. Find something slump-busting! 7y

Lmstraubie Bail. No guilt. Put it to the side and try it again at another time. It just might not be the right moment for this book. 7y
BookishFeminist Bail! You can always go back to it if you feel moved to do so. If you're not feeling it, find something you are! 7y
