Don't Know Tough
Don't Know Tough | Eli Cranor
7 posts | 7 read | 6 to read
Eli Cranor's debut is a mash-up of Friday Night Lights and the Southern noir. Trent Powers relocates his family from Anaheim to Arkansas to take over as head coach of the Denton Pirates, a high school football team powered by a volatile but talented running back named Billy Lowe. Billy comes from an extremely troubled home: a trailer park where he is terrorized by his unstable mother's abusive boyfriend. Billy takes out his anger on the field, and it's not long before he crosses a line. Instead of punishing him, though, Trent takes Billy into his home, hoping to protect his star player as the Pirates begin their playoff run. But when Billy's stepfather is found murdered, nothing can stop an explosive chain of violence that could tear the town apart. WINNER OF THE PETER LOVESEY FIRST CRIME NOVEL CONTEST

Listened to it on tape and the author read it. He did such an amazing job, giving voice to the protagonists. Story had me caught up, but also unsure of the ending.

Arkansas high school running back Billy Lowe is dirt poor, angry and abused by his mother‘s boyfriend. But his voice is pure and it‘s hard not to be sympathetic for someone who grew up as he did. The coach tries to help him, as does the coach‘s daughter. Can he be saved? This one is worth your time.

A football mystery! A small town coach who has made it through the foster care system knows how hard it is for his Star running back. Sometimes football is all that they have. Great read.

YAAAASSSSS! Absolutely loved this audiobook. Seriously, the BEST author-narrated book I‘ve ever heard. He was off the charts. Increadible All-American/Friday Night Lights Grit Lit. Will almost certainly be a top ten of the year read for me. #ARC #audiobook #Netgalley

This wasn‘t a bad book but I struggled to remain engaged. The characters were hard to root for and had little redeeming qualities…and the end was depressing but very realistic. Not like Friday Night Lights for me although they tried comparing it to that in synopsis.

I‘m so excited I finally won a Goodreads #giveaway!! Can‘t wait to receive this in the mail. I finally got my parents to watch Friday Night Lights, the book summary says this book has some similarities I like to think the universe must be paying me back 🤣
