I love when libraries have their little lists on Libby - this little gem is from Queens Public Library‘s Native American Heritage list. I may have downloaded like 10 books. Gonna read them while listening to football games.

Pickpick

Karen Pheasant-Neganigwane (Anishinaabe), has been dancing at powwows since the 1970s. Numerous photos of her (see above) & her family members in dance regalia are included. What is most remarkable about this book aimed at middle school readers is how informative it is. Effects of colonization, sacred & contemporary approaches to dance & drumming, etiquette for visitors & many other cultural aspects are covered. Glossary too. #Indigenous

Sleepswithbooks I remember going to powwows on Walpole Island as a child and feeling there was something magical about them. The history, storytelling, beautiful dress was mesmerizing. I miss seeing them. 3y

While the content of this book goes far beyond the aesthetics of powwow culture, there‘s no denying the visual appeal of dance regalia.

KathyWheeler The Poarch Band of Creek Indians up the road from me has a pow wow every year around Thanksgiving that they invite the public to attend. I keep meaning to go. 3y
Lindy @KathyWheeler Yes, go! I have only been to one, an intertribal powwow in Banff a few years ago; it was great. 3y
KathyWheeler @Lindy it seems like such a fun way to learn about their culture. It was cancelled this year. 3y
Lindy @KathyWheeler Maybe next year. 😊 3y
