Dog Flowers: A Memoir | Danielle Geller
post image
Pickpick

When Danielle got word her mother is dying in Florida, she rushes to her side only to watch her slip away, her mothers life contained in a few suitcases, one loaded with diaries, cards,& photographs.Though both Danielle‘s parents had lives full of addiction, abuse,& abandonment she uses the material to make sense of her family‘s lives. Her ability to mine this material with such grace is amazing.

CUTCO Cook Book: Meat and Poultry Cookery | Margaret Mitchell, Frank Marcello
post image

My cookbook fandom also leans toward those cookbooks that came with a kitchen item or small electric you bought. Your mom or grandma probably had one in the drawer from the Sunbeam blender or your GE electric skillet! This one was produced by cutlery maker Cutco . 1956 love the cute illustrations throughout.

Tamra Love the illustrations from the 50s & 60s! You have reminded me to post some from a vintage find from many months ago. Some are definitely of the era, i.e. racial & gender stereotyping. Cookbooks make terrific time capsules! 6d
Leftcoastzen @Tamra stereotyping definitely a negative of some material from that time. 6d

Cantwell came to NYC fresh from college w/$80 & a typewriter dad had given her .Her 1st job was at Mademoiselle, very soon after Sylvia Plath edited the college issue. She sought out Greenwich Village, the only neighborhood she had heard of, her writing about the area in the 50s & 60s delighted me , the village is my favorite too.She brings to life an era of publishing full of characters & challenging bosses. Bohemian living on the cheap.⬇️

Leftcoastzen She doesn‘t shy away from struggling to keep her self esteem & sanity while dealing with career, a husband , children when the culture was changing .A intense often beautiful memoir. 1w

Leftcoastzen @LeahBergen @batsy It‘s hard to read some of the fear she has . She comes to NY in the same summer Plath mentioned in the Bell Jar. The death of the Rosenbergs. She questions should I have a Jewish boyfriend with the red scare ramping up, intellectuals are suspect. She married him , of course, but wants to shed light on these dark issues. She was Irish Catholic, remember the old guard in pub. then , mostly WASPs w/ trust funds.Even the women. 1w

#stepsibs #spinster Pappy is a singer , Mamma is a dancer. Both had kids from earlier relationships. Maria,Niall ,& the youngest they had together,Celia.
Theater is an itinerant life, the stepsibs bond is strong & it gives them a different perspective on life than most families.I fell in love w/ this book , when they set out to a country house to meet the family Maria would marry into, well it‘s one of the funniest things I‘ve ever read ! Celia 🔽

Leftcoastzen Becomes the one who sacrificed much to take care of Pappy in his dotage, sacrificing her ambitions. This book is dark at times , hilarious, & very much like the best dysfunctional family stories that show up in many NYRB titles.LOL at the country house ! #poetrymonth the somewhat forgotten modernist . He was an admirer of T.S.Eliot , Crane had the most exacting standards for his poetry, he had limited success in his lifetime.
