I wanted to show one of those cute bookstore stickers from the old days with an object people would recognize for size comparison. Just a reminder of the store you bought it from. Or maybe attract new business if it was a gift. I love finding these and bookplates.🥰

What fun! The 2nd in a series on Paris neighborhoods. Think windmills along the streets , Renoir, Van Gogh ,Toulouse-Lautrec & the Moulin Rouge. Later, into the jazz age , with lost generation writers & Josephine Baker. Baxters style is conversational, like he‘s taking you through history, culture ,architecture through time. Brief chapters make it a fun break from my chunksters! I will continue to seek out more books in this series!

This book I grabbed from the book sale. Grove Press was founded in 1947, known for international works & being the first to publish in the U.S.books formally deemed obscene by censors. Think Henry Miller & D.H. Lawrence. I didn‘t know this author, apparently Khrushchev wasn‘t thrilled w/him, but during the Cold War “thaw” Voznesensky was able to travel. A strong collection that carries a mid century vibe.

When I saw the first couple were runaway puritans, & the language a bit flowery, I was afraid this book might be too twee. Glad I was wrong. The generations that put everything into their little slice of the world are humbled by the fact that nature doesn‘t care. Between owners & tenants nature reclaims the place ,even the house. The writing is beautiful, most of the characters are unique & unforgettable, best book I‘ve read this year.

The Fetishist | Katherine Min

Pickpick

A smart book !It‘s dark yet funny at times ,the writing is evocative & beautiful. All three of the characters are musicians, mostly classical, young Kyoko plays punk. Kyoko wants revenge on Daniel , who seduced her mother, then dropped her leading to her suicide. While Alma, struggling with illness, involved with him too, wonders if she was ever loved. Questions, do some men fetishize stereotypical Asian tropes?Did he even know them at all?

Reggie This sounds crazy! Which is why I‘m stacking this. Great review! 1mo
Leftcoastzen @Reggie thank you! It is tough, thoughtful, sometimes funny. She really knew how to write! I love Bosch ! I watched all the shows , there is definitely overlap & some changes. Actually the section on the show when he went undercover to expose pill mill crime was much more intense on TV than in the book.
